It is under the administration of Republika Srpska. Gradačac and Modriča are neighbouring towns; and Čardak and Kornica are neighbouring villages which fall under its jurisdiction.
Bosanski Šamac is the birthplace of Alija Izetbegović and Zoran Đinđić, former leaders of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia respectively.
The census of 1991 recorded 32,835 people in the Bosanski Šamac municipality: 14670 Croats 44.6%, 13619 Serbs 41.4%, 2248 Bosniaks 6.8%, 1722 Yugoslavs 5.2% and 576 others 1.7%. The town of Šamac had 6,267 residents, of which there were 35% Bosniaks, 28% Serbs, 19% Yugoslavs, 13% Croats and 4% others.
