"Return of the King (Entourage)"

Return of the King is the 17th episode from Season 3 of the dramedy television series Entourage. The episode is the 39th overall.

Summary

After the main role in "Medellin" is left vacant again the producer, Nick Rubenstein's father, sets a deadline at sunset for finding a new actor. However due to Yom Kippur, Ari and Nick can't use their cell phones and under the watchful eyes of their wife/mother they have a hard time arranging the deal for Vince. They both get caught by their spouses numerous times using their cell phones and talking business, both forbidden on Yom Kippur as it is the Day of Atonement in the Jewish religion. Nick and Ari decide the only way they're going to keep the film alive is to disturb the studio head at another temple where he is currently worshiping. They explain the situation to him and he tells them he refuses to do any business on the high holiday and is noticeably upset about their disrespectful visit amidst the service. Vince and Eric push Amanda to make the deal happen but because no one is answering their cell phone she can't get in touch with anyone. Nick and Ari, knowing their significant others would be extremely angry if they caught them doing business are pretty much stuck at their respective family gatherings to celebrate the breaking of the fast. Because Vince and Eric have been fighting for this movie for two years they decide to visit Ari's home in hopes of getting the deal finalized. Ari tells them that he can't do any business unless they have a phone for him to use, and borrows Eric's phone which his wife catches him using. He tells her that Vince and Eric aren't Jewish so they have every right to use their phone, even though there is just a few minutes until sunset.

Vince agrees to sign on with 2 minutes left before sunset, despite being offered $3 million instead of what was previously agreed upon ($6 million). When they call Nick at his home he yells at his mom who tells him not to answer the phone and answers it anyway, informing Ari, Vince, and Eric that the plug has been pulled for good, despite the deadline not yet arriving. Vince meets up with Amanda at a restaurant and accuses her of intentionally stalling on the deal for personal reasons and not understanding how important the project was to him. Amanda responds by telling him that the Nick upset the studio head by bothering him at temple again and that the studio has decided that the movie has been plagued since the beginning and is finally cutting its losses. She claims that she did everything she could to arrange the deal but it was impossible to do in the time-frame when no one could readily use their cell phones. She also tells him the studio head would love to do a movie with Vince and that he wants to have lunch with him to discuss some other projects. Vince tells Amanda he feels stupid and asks where they go from there. She tells Vince that clearly he still hasn't let go of Ari and is apparently fed up with it at this point. The episode ends with her saying goodbye to Vince in a way that seemingly ends their client-agent and personal relationship, and she gets up and leaves.

Return of the King

The title of the episode refers to the subplot that involves Drama and a horse named King who he has high aspirations for. He bets $1000 on the horse at the track, prompting Vince to bet $5000 when Drama explains that the horse's grandfather was responsible for financing his Lincoln Continental when he won a bet years earlier on the horse's grandfather. During the race King is in last place most of the time, however makes his move and looks as though he has a shot of winning. However, he ultimately doesn't even place. Drama goes to talk with the owner to learn the fate of the horse when he learns that the owner is planning on cutting his loses by either sending the horse to a dude ranch or the glue factory as it is sterile and therefore cannot provide any other use since it can't win races. Due to Drama's relationship with the horse's grandfather he wouldn't allow the horse to be killed and so pays the owner $2000 for the horse in order to save its life. Being that it is an impulsive purchase they have nowhere to keep the horse so they leave it temporarily in their courtyard until they can find a home for it. However the horse promptly escapes and goes for a walk as the gate opens automatically when something heavy (such as a car) engages the sensors. When Drama finds the horse a little girl tells the police officers investigating the stray horse that Drama is the owner and he is fined $5000 for not having a permit.

At this point Turtle convinces Drama that he needs to find the horse a good home if he doesn't want it to be sent to the glue factory or have to take care of it and so offers it as a gift to Edward Burns, the producer of his TV show who is a horse enthusiast. He is reluctant to accept the gift because his interest in horses is merely an interest (as shown by horse carvings on the door to his home) and he doesn't have any of the facilities to take care of such an animal. However when his daughter comes outside she immediately assumes it is a birthday present for her and is clearly adamant about keeping the horse which doesn't make Drama's producer very happy. No resolution is shown in the episode but it is assumed that he took the horse as a gift since he was guilt tripped into it by his young daughter.

Significance

  • Amanda is no longer Vince's agent or girlfriend.
  • Vince's dream project, Medellin appears to have once again died.
