Albert Agarunovich Agarunov (Azeri: Albert Aqarunov) (25 April 1969, Baku – 7 May, 1992, Shusha) was a starshina of the Azerbaijani Army who died during the Nagorno-Karabakh War. He was among the last Azeris to defend Shusha, which was captured by Armenian forces on May 9, 1992.
Life
Albert Agarunov was born in a Baku suburb to Mountain Jewish parents – Agarun (an oil-worker and Quba-native) and Lea Agarunov, and was one of the family's 10 children. After obtaining a degree in technology, he started working at a machine-building factory as a metal turner. He served in the Soviet Army from 1987 to 1989. In 1991, he volunteerly enlisted in the Azerbaijani Army in the war against Armenia over Azerbaijan's Nagorno-Karabakh region. On December 8 1991, Agarunov along with driver Agababa Huseynov managed to put 9 Armenian tanks and 2 armoured trucks out of action. He died during the capture of Shusha, a strategically important town and major historical and cultural centre of Azerbaijan. He was posthumously awarded the title of the National Hero of Azerbaijan.
Albert Agarunov was buried in the Alley of Martyrs in May 1992.
