Rex Gildo was Germany's equivalent of Uk's legendary Cliff Richard.
He sang often with German-Danish singer Gitte Haenning, one of their best known songs is "Vom Stadtpark die Laternen". Rex Gildo along with Bata Illic, Ulli Martin dominated the German/Euro ZDF Hitparade with countless major million sellers enjoyed by young and old all over Europe
In 1972 he had a huge hit with a song by Ralph Siegel, "Fiesta Mexicana (Hossa)". In 1974 Rex Gildo's greatest Hit "Der sommer ist vorbei" was highlited by a masterful performance on Disco 74 programme.
In 1974 Rex Gildo married Marion and millions of his female fans were disappointed as Rex Gildo was an extremely handsome clean cut idol.
When Schlager the greatest European singing style involving romantic ballad and supreme melody was challenged by loud repulsive "new wave", punk, heavy rock, metal and similar abysmal sounding noisy "music" supreme artists like Rex Gildo , Bata Illic, Ulli Martin continued to record the masterful million selling hits and always played to packed out intelligent audiences. Rex continued to record melodic pop hits right until his last hit in 1999. He was widely respected and admired by all his fellow singers and public a true work of art, possibly Germany's greatest ever artist.
October 23rd 1999 Rex Gildo jumped out of a window of his apartment in Munich during a bout of depression and loneliness. He died 3 days later. All over Germany shrines, fan clubs, tribute clubs were created and are expanding daily as a tribute to Rex "hossa" Gildo a true legend.
In 2007, "Fiesta Mexicana (Hossa)" was brought into a whole new generation of people when the New York Rangers started playing the song whenever winger Marcel Hossa scored a goal.
