It was founded in 1857 when it sponsored the First American Chess Congress. The purpose of the ACA is to extend the role of chess in American Society. Current membership as of 2007 is approximately 71,000 members. Membership is $1 for life. The ACA publishes a monthly magazine, American Chess Monthly which can be subscribed to separately. ACA contact info is amchess@cox.net. The ACA has not had a website since 2000 at which time its webmaster Ron Dale died, just previous to the 2000 ACA California Open.
