A caldera is a large crater formed by a volcano. A caldera usually has a flat level surface at the bottom of the crater formed by the hardening of a lake of lava.

Caldera is a technology company associated with the Linux and open source movement, including producing workstation and server distributions. Unlike most other Linux companies, however, Caldera purchased the rights to the UNIX mark and the SCO UNIX product line (a proprietary product for Intel computers that would be expected to complete rather directly with Linux).
