"The Reformist" as he was called, Dev Shumsher Rana has been recognized by historians as the first benevolent, progessive & liberal-minded ruler of Nepal. He had a great vision & introduced a number of reforms. He made considerable improvements in the arsenal at Nakkhu (south of Kathmandu City), proclaimed universal education, ordered 300 primary schools to be open all-over the country, started the nation's first new media The Gorkhapatra(the daily with a large nationwide circulation) took steps to abolish slavery system & several other social welfare schemes.
