According to the paper's "about us" page, it was started by "a group of Muslim activists who wanted to make a difference by empowering the Muslim community with its own media outlet." It is published out of the Council on American-Islamic Relations's office in Anaheim, California.
The paper describes itself as the "largest Muslim newspaper in California. An editor working for the paper was described as working for "the largest Muslim newspaper in California" when quoted in an article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch about another topic. 25,000 copies are circulated monthly; most are placed at Muslim businesses and mosques in California for free distribution, with "over 1,200" mailed to subscribers Its staff includes and Deputy Editor is Muneer Adhami.
The paper "covers a large variety of local, national, and international events, features, profiles, and has the following sections: arts, book review, restaurant review, Islam, money, legal, kids, travel, interfaith, commentary, and opinion."
