"Return of the King (Entourage)"

"Return of the King" is the 17th episode from Season 3 of the dramedy television series Entourage.

Plot

After the main role in Medellin is left vacant again the producer, Nick Rubenstein's father, sets a deadline at sunset for finding a new actor. However due to Yom Kippur, Ari and Nick can't use their cell phones and under the watchful eyes of their wife/mother they have a hard time arranging the deal for Vince. They both get caught by their spouses numerous times using their cell phones and talking business, both forbidden on Yom Kippur as it is the Day of Atonement in the Jewish religion. Nick and Ari decide the only way they're going to keep the film alive is to disturb the studio head at another temple where he is currently worshiping. They explain the situation to him and he tells them he refuses to do any business on the high holiday and is noticeably upset about their disrespectful visit amidst the service. Vince and Eric push Amanda to make the deal happen but because no one is answering their cell phone she can't get in touch with anyone. Nick and Ari, knowing their significant others would be extremely angry if they caught them doing business are pretty much stuck at their respective family gatherings to celebrate the breaking of the fast. Because Vince and Eric have been fighting for this movie for two years they decide to visit Ari's home in hopes of getting the deal finalized. Ari tells them that he can't do any business unless they have a phone for him to use, and borrows Eric's phone which his wife catches him using. He tells her that Vince and Eric aren't Jewish so they have every right to use their phone, even though there is just a few minutes until sunset.

Vince agrees to sign on with 2 minutes left before sunset, despite being offered $3 million instead of what was previously agreed upon ($6 million). When they call Nick at his home he yells at his mom who tells him not to answer the phone and answers it anyway, informing Ari, Vince, and Eric that the plug has been pulled for good, despite the deadline not yet arriving. Vince meets up with Amanda at a restaurant and accuses her of intentionally stalling on the deal for personal reasons and not understanding how important the project was to him. Amanda responds by telling him that the Nick upset the studio head by bothering him at temple again and that the studio has decided that the movie has been plagued since the beginning and is finally cutting its losses. She claims that she did everything she could to arrange the deal but it was impossible to do in the time-frame when no one could readily use their cell phones. She also tells him the studio head would love to do a movie with Vince and that he wants to have lunch with him to discuss some other projects. Vince tells Amanda he feels stupid and asks where they go from there. She tells Vince that clearly he still hasn't let go of Ari and is apparently fed up with it at this point. The episode ends with her saying goodbye to Vince in a way that seemingly ends their client-agent and personal relationship, and she gets up and leaves.

Trivia

  • In addition to the sub-plot involving Drama & the horse named King, the episode title is a reference to The Return of the King, the third & final volume of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The novel has been adapted into both animated and live-action movies, notably the 2003 released Peter Jackson directed movie.
  • The temple used as the location for Ari and Nick's temple, Leo Baeck Temple in Los Angeles, is the real-life temple of Ari Emanuel, upon whom Ari Gold is based.
  • The episode is centered around the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur occurs anywhere from mid-September until early October depending on the year. However, the episode of Entourage was released in early May. This means that either Entourage is not happening in the present time or that simply this is a factual error.
  • In the episode, Ari makes reference to 'slashing prices like "Crazy Eddie"'. Adam Goldberg, who plays Nick Rubenstein in the episode, acted as Chandler's roommate "crazy" Eddie in a Friends (sitcom) episode.
