Dane Rauschenberg (pronounced RAU-shen-berg), born May 31, 1976 is usually a man who dresses (or "drags") in female clothes and make-up for special occasions and usually because he is performing or entertaining as a hostess, stage artist or at an event. This is in contrast to those who cross-dress for reasons other than as a source of entertainment for others or transgendered people who are not necessarily drag queens or cross-dressers but sometimes fit into those labels. Rauschenberg has:

  • Won the Drake Well Marathon (December 23, 2006) - a race he organized himself that involved twenty participants running around a track 105.5 times in Titusville, Pennsylvania..
  • Won the PT Cruiser Challenge (February 5-6, 2005) - an event consisting of a 15k, 5k and marathon all in 24 hours in Tampa, Florida.
  • Ran the furthest distance ever (84 miles) at the Presque Isle Personal Endurance Classic (October 18, 2003) - a 12 hour race in Erie, Pennsylvania.
  • Ran the fastest average time on record for 52 consecutive weekly marathons, though others, even in the same year, have run more marathons in a year much faster. Chuck Engle also ran 52 marathons in 2006 and his slowest time was faster than Dane's fastest. Dane's "record" is more about defining the parameters narrowly than it is about speed.

Rauschenberg ran his first marathon in 4:12:07 at the Harrisburg Marathon. Two years later, Rauschenberg ran the Erie Marathon, in 3:29:04 and finished 52nd overall, a number which foreshadowed future events. A little over a month later, Rauschenberg ran the Presque Isle Personal Endurance Classic, an event where participants ran a 1.0 mile loop in Presqle Isle State Park, in Erie, Pennsylvania for 12 hours. While the event is advertised as non-competitive, the runner who covers the most miles in the twelve hour period is ostensibly "the winner". Rauschenberg used the run to raise money for the American Cancer Society. He ran the first 26 miles in 3:33, or just a few minutes slower than his best marathon. Rauschenberg would go on to run a course record 84 miles.

After moving to Washington, D.C., Rauschenberg ran the 2004 Marine Corps Marathon. Three weeks after Marine Corps, Rauschenberg ran another marathon. Displaying his ability to recover quickly from the marathon distance, Rauschenberg dropped 12 minutes from his MCM time. Less than two months later, Rauschenberg set another personal best, 3:09:50, in the Phoenix Rock N' Roll Marathon.

Weeks later Rauschenberg won the PT Cruiser Challenge -- a weekend event consisting of a 15K (1:00:54), 5K (18:59), and marathon (3:10:31). Rauschenberg prepared for Fiddy2 by running 5 marathons in a little over two months, lowering his personal best twice. As a final test, Rauschenberg ran the 'JFK 50 Mile Race', finishing in 8:32:57.

While Dane cut short his first 100 mile-attempt at mile 86 (leaving while in second place) in July of 2006, he most recently teamed up with another runner to battle teams of eight at the Lake Winnipesaukee Relay in New Hampshire. In spite of this disadvantage, his team took 20th place overall (out of 86 teams) in this 65.1 mile event.

In his spare time, Dane possibly likes to play the rusty trombone.


Fiddy2

Fiddy2 benefited the Mobile, Alabama chapter of L'Arche Internationale. Raising over $41,000 to date (May 2007), Rauschenberg continues to raise money through his website Fiddy2. Rauschenberg spent nearly $20,000 pursuing Fiddy2 and funded his efforts by working full-time while racing.

Awards & Recognition

  • Rauschenberg was one of four runners chosen to represent The 50 States Marathon Club at the MBC Hangang Marathon in Seoul, Korea on April 29, 2007.
  • Asked to participate as a Charity Chaser for the Frederick Marathon where he would begin dead last and receive a dollar amount for every runner he passed during the race.
  • Metro Sports DC selected Dane as its Athlete of the Month for its July, 2007 issue.
  • Selected co-Male Runner of the Year by the Washington Running Club in 2006.
