Syria is a Middle-Eastern country that borders on Israel, Lebanon and Turkey.

Security and terrorism

Syria is a member of the U.N. Security Council. Its U.N. ambassador, Mikhail Webhe serves as president of the Security Council during June 2002.

Since 1994, Syria has been on the official U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism. Islamic Jihad, considered a terrorist group by the U.S. and Israel, has its headquarters in Syria.

Some writers advocate the removal of Syria from the U.N. Security Council, on the grounds that its support for terrorism contradicts the stated mission of the council. http://meta.wikipedia.com/upload/sy.gif
