Rex Gildo (July 2 1939 - October 26 1999) was a german Schlager Balladeer. He sold millions of records and starred in 1960s and 1970s romantic musicals.
He often sang with german-danish singer Gitte Hænning and had the million selling hit singles "Speedy Gonzales", "Goodbye Susanna", "Fiesta Mexicana", "Der Sommer ist vorbei", "Marie, der letzte Tanz ist nur für Dich", "Ein Rendezvous auf Venedig" and "Mexikanische Nacht". Rex Gildo became famous mainly in Germany, Holland and Austria especially for his melodic artistically songs of love and romance, flavoured with spanish lyrics. Rex Gildo's most famous hit singles were "Fiesta Mexicana" (1972) and "Der Sommer ist vorbei" (1973). In 1974 Rex Gildo married and millions of his female fans hearts were broken. Rex Gildo continued to sell Schlager ballads, appeared on television shows like ZDF Hitparade, concerts and films.
On 1999-10-26 he died in Munich hospital after a depression suicide leap on 1999-10-23. His fans pay tribute, buy records, create and run memorable Rex Gildo websites, campaign for DVD/CD releases.
Trivia
In 2007, "Fiesta Mexicana (Hossa)" was played whenever winger Marcel Hossa from the New York Rangers scored a goal.
