Trunks (called Chibi Trunks by many fans to distinguish him from Mirai Trunks) is a fictional character in the manga Dragon Ball, and the anime Dragon Ball Z. He is the Earthling/Saiyan hybrid son of Bulma and Vegeta. In the English dub of the Dragon Ball Z Budokai 2 video game, he is called Kid Trunks. Trunks' seiyū is Takeshi Kusao. In the American English dub, he is voiced by Laura Bailey as a child (in Dragon Ball Z) and by Eric Vale as an adult (in both Dragon Ball Z and GT). In the Canadian dub of DBZ, Cathy Weseluck provides the voice of kid Trunks; in the Canadian dub of GT, Matthew Erickson provides his voice. The character's name is an obvious pun on "trunks", a type of male garment.

Character history

Origin of his name

His unusual name comes from the running joke of his family members all being named after various undergarments. The English dub of Dragon Ball Z has his name as Trunks Briefs (Torankusu Burifu) while the Dragon Ball GT dub identifies him as Mr Briefs during Trunks appearances as President of Capsule Corp. Bulma does actually refer to him by this full name in the anime.

Dragon Ball Z

Kid Trunks or Present-day Trunks, makes his first appearance in the Android Saga of Dragon Ball Z as the infant first-born child of Bulma and Vegeta. Trunks has Vegeta's facial features and skin tone, but has his grandfather Dr. Briefs' hair, and Bulmas' eye color; as per his paternal heritage, his hair turns golden yellow and his eyes become iris-less and turn a tealish color when he becomes a Super Saiyan. In the Android Saga Trunks is seen as a teenager and a baby. His role becomes much larger by the Buu Saga, at which point Trunks is eight years old and fantastically strong for his age. As a child he was trained by Vegeta. He turns Super Saiyan while training with Vegeta in the gravity room, an event that comes as a shock to Vegeta considering his young age (this is not, however, the first time he went Super Saiyan; the circumstances surrounding his initial transformation are unknown). In the Fusion Saga (a subset of the Buu saga), he and his best friend Goten fight Buu, both separately and by joining together into the temporarily-fused being Gotenks. Trunks can be very proud, stubborn, and arrogant at times, much like his father. As a child, Trunks seems to have a habit of taunting and mooning his enemies. It should be noted that neither Goten nor Trunks were shown to have tails. It is possible for them to have them since Gohan had a tail when he was born. When Akira Toriyama was asked about this in an interview he replied, "Tails must be a recessive trait." Fans tend to take this as another one of Toriyama's hiccups, because genetically that makes no sense, and realize that he simply forgot about them when he was making the characters.

During the final episodes of Dragon Ball Z, Trunks, who is now eighteen, appears to be physically identical to Future Trunks. Like Future Trunks, he begins to call Vegeta "father" instead of "dad" more often. Personality-wise, he's more cheerful (as the world is not devastated in this time line). He continues to spend much time with Goten, who he remains best friends with. He also has a sister named Bra who is approximately 10 to 13 years younger than he is.

Origin of his sword

After the events of the movie Wrath of the Dragon, Trunks begins to carry around the sword given to him by Tapion, saying it was always meant for him. This sword strongly resembles the sword carried by Future Trunks, but it is likely not the same sword as Future Trunks never met Tapion.

Super Saiyan

Trunks is second youngest to achieve Super Saiyan, a transformation that massively increases his physical abilities. He is first revealed to be a Super Saiyan at age seven, however, the conditions involving his first Super Saiyan transformation have never been elaborated on. He is never seen to ascend to the higher transformations in Dragon Ball Z, but only in Dragon Ball GT.

Super Saiyan 2

Trunks possibly achieves this in the hyperbolic time chamber while training with Goten during the Fusion Saga, which the end result was fusing into Gotenks. This may have allowed them to reach Super Saiyan 3 as Gotenks. However, he is not actually seen transforming into Super Saiyan 2 until Dragon Ball GT when Baby (Dragon Ball) tried to take over his body which forced Trunks to transform to his strongest state where he clearly shows Super Saiyan 2 traits. Unfortunately, they did not put much effort into distiguishing Super Saiyan from Super Saiyan 2 in Dragon Ball GT. This causes controversy between fans since in Dragon Ball GT he does show the physical characteristics for a brief moment of Super Saiyan 2, but even with Gohan little effort is made to distinguish what transformation is done.
