Deleting Physical Infrastructure: A Discussion or Two

the savage bastard says:
have you ever heard of a highway being deleted?

(name blanked on request) says:

no?

the savage bastard says:

have you ever heard of a highway being decommissioned?

(name blanked on request) says:

like torn down?

the savage bastard says:

the highway, or at least it's designation, ceases to be
for example, Ontario once had a highway 2. Now it doesnt. Highway 2 was decommissioned, and is now a variety of county roads

(name blanked on request) says:

No I can't think of any. Why?

the savage bastard says:

someone on Misplaced Pages recentlly changed about a hundred articles to say that highways around Canada and the Us were "deleted"
I've never heard of a highway being deleted though, I find the term bizarre
but apaprently, decommissioning a highway is a neologism

(name blanked on request) says:

no have never heard of them being deleted

the savage bastard says:

neither have I
the savage bastard says:
have you ever heard of a highway being deleted?

TDK laptop says:

as in closed down?
or rerouted

the savage bastard says:

Have you ever heard of a highway being decommissioned?

TDK laptop says:

yes
why?

the savage bastard says:

which term makes more sense: deleted, or decommissioned?

TDK laptop says:

decomissioned

the savage bastard says:

Someone on wikipedia recently edited many articles to state that highways were deleted as opposed to decommissioned

TDK laptop says:

deleted means toren up complelty not abandoned

Thanks for proving the unsuitability of "decommissioned" - the first person thought it meant "torn down" and the second "abandoned". --NE2 23:02, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
