The Syrian Arab Republic is a Middle Eastern country that borders on Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Turkey. Syria has troops in Lebanon and a substantial degree of control over that country.

Syria is a temporary member of the UN Security Council for 2002 through 2003. Its U.N. ambassador, Mikhail Webhe served as president of the Security Council during June 2002.

Syria is regarded by the United States as a state sponsor of terrorism.
