It covers daily life in a Mexican elementary school and the children's relationships with a charismatic teacher named Jimena. Among other plot devices, it deals with the differences between the upper and lower classes of Mexican society — specifically as seen in a romantic relationship between Cirilo, a poor black boy, and a spoiled rich girl, Maria Juaquina (played by Ludwika Paleta).

Carrossel (Portuguese name) is the most successful Mexican telenovela in Brazil. First broadcast in 1991, it reached an audience of 20 million. As well, it opened an era of Mexican telenovelas being broadcast in Brazil by SBT. The actress who portrayed the teacher, Gabriela Rivero, became well known in that nation.
