Epic battle of the First Balkan War of 1912 during which the Serbian forces of Field Marchal Radomir Putnik crushed the Ottoman army of General Zekki north of Uskub, known today as Skopje, the modern capital of Macedonia. Although it was late October, the weather got very cold at the time and this contributed to the defeat of ill-prepared Ottoman soldiers.

The battle effectively ended Ottoman rule in Europe, although isolated garrisons held out until the following spring.
