Both franchises are property of Namco.
Yoshimitsu first appeared in the Tekken series and made a crossover to the second game of the Soul series, Soul Calibur (The first was titled Soul Blade / Soul Edge). He also appears in sequel Soul Calibur 2. In both Soul games he is a hidden character and must be unlocked. Yoshimisu will most likely appear in Soul Calibur 3 when it is released in Fall 2005 for PlayStation 2.
In both franchises, Yoshimitsu is a samurai-ninja and fights with a sword called Yoshimitsu. Many of his moves are shared across both franchises. He is known for his unorthodox moves and abilities, most notably teleportation and self healing. His most devastating and risky attack is his unblockable Suicide move, where he turns around and thrusts his sword into his abdomen in a form of seppuku, ideally also hitting the opponent as well. Interestingly, the opponent receives more damage than Yoshimitsu himself if hit. Another signature move called "Stone Fists" (known as the "1A" series by veteran players) has him spinning like a top. In Soul Calibur 2, its power lies in its tech-crouching, tracking, and mix-ups. In Tekken, its power lies mainly in its Speed and use in combos and juggles.
Yoshimitsu's story is different for each game series. Since Soul Calibur takes place in the 17th century or so and Tekken is contemporary, the Soul Calibur Yoshimitsu is considered the ancestor of the Tekken Yoshimitsu. One idea is that Yoshi is a different character in each game time line, the name he takes comes from his sword, 'Yoshimitsu' - 'Lucky Light'. This sword is weilded by the leader of the Manji Ninja Clan.
Tekken Yoshimitsu
History:
As the leader of the Manji Party, Yoshimitsu dedicated himself to providing food, medical assistance, and shelter to the ever-increasing number of political refugees around the world. Unfortunately, with a constant lack of necessary funding and manpower, Yoshimitsu was unsure about the future of his organization. When Yoshimitsu heard about The King of Iron Fist Tournament 4, he envisioned a union between the Manji Party and the Mishima Zaibatsu. With this dream in mind, Yoshimitsu decides to enter the Tournament immediately. He must defeat Heihachi Mishima at any cost.
Soul Calibur Yoshimitsu
History: (from the Soul Calibur character page)
Yoshimitsu is the sole survivor of a clan of ninja destroyed by a vengeful lord. He attempted to enact revenge but lost. While battling the lord's army, Yoshimitsu lost one arm. Traveling to Europe, he began searching for Soul Edge, so that he could destroy the army and finally have his revenge. He followed a series of bloody murders, certain that Soul Edge was the weapon used, and eventually came to Ostrheinsburg Castle, which was empty. While leaving, Yoshimitsu realized that his katana had a powerful and evil energy within it. Although he then swore to purify his sword, it was soon stolen. Searching for his sword again, Yoshimitsu began working on behalf of the poor, stealing money from the rich to give to them. He soon learned of great treasures held in the tomb (the "Money Pit") of the "Merchant of Death", Vercci. In the tomb, Yoshimitsu found vast treasures, including a shard of metal and his own sword, both emitting the same aura of evil. He took both and swore to remove any trace of the evil from the Earth, and began traveling far and wide searching for the remains of Soul Edge.
Character Analysis:
Yoshimitsu is universally regarded as a top-tier character in Soul Calibur 2. He blends a devastating combination of speed and damage potential. His abilities shine at close range, but he is well-suited at medium range as well. At long range, he possesses the tools to close in to where he is more comfortable. A number of his moves are derivations of his Tekken moves but he has a variety of Soul specific moves as well.
A large factor in his strong close range game is his throws that come out one frame (the game runs at 60 frame/s) faster than the average throw and do much more damage. Almost all give him excellent wake-up position as well.
To fully harness Yoshimitsu's potential means a mastery of his "tricks" as well. These include, but are not limited to, his just-frames (moves that require inputs within 1 or 2 frames), his "flash" move, and his Pogo and Meditation stances and their subsequent followups.
In an homage to the Tekken series, Yoshimitsu has a life-stealing throw that, if connected, gives him the ability to perform three random Tekken moves. He can also access this ability by soul-charging to Level 2.
In Soul Calibur 2, Yoshimitsu is voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama (Japanese voice) and Phil Sheridan (English voice).
