James Gillespie's High School is a secondary school in Marchmont, Edinburgh. James Gillespie's High School is well known for outstanding art , Modern Studies and Music departments. Founded in 1803 as a result of a legacy left by wealthy snuff and tobacco manufacturer James Gillespie, it initially had 65 boys and one master. The campus borders James Gillespie's Primary School and it is one of the only high schools in the area that do not require uniforms. It has a school role of approximately 1,200 and the current head teacher is Alex Wallace.

The school consists of five buildings (dating from 1966): Warrender, Thirlestane, Spylaw, Bruntsfield, and Lauder. Over the summer of 2007, improvements were made after the government declared Spylaw not fit for purpose and there is currently a campaign being run to build a new school..

Nowadays it is a mixed sex school, with standard grade and higher results well above the national average and is known for its left of center attitude. The school is well known for being one of the best state schools in Edinburgh, outshining all the other state high schools in that half of Edinburgh. The school's motto is "Fidelis et Fortes" (Latin: "Fidelity and Strength")
