He was appointed to the League List at the start of season 2006/2007. He had previously refereed within the Football Conference. In November 2006 took charge of an England Under 19 international friendly versus Switzerland.
After a game between Hull City and Charlton Athletic on 2nd October 2007 he received considerable criticism from the managers of both teams over his handling of the game. During the game there were many disputed decisions, a disallowed goal and two sendings off, both of which were disputed by the team managers.
On 1st January 2008, he took charge of Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield Town, where he gave a contentious penalty decision to the away side, which presumably he imagined since experts in the game have yet been able to determine the reasoning behind it. To compound this decision he also sent off Nottingham Forest's Kelvin Wilson.

He also refereed Wrexham vs Brentford, December 15th 2007 where he received criticism from the home fans for his handling of the game where he gave a soft penalty to the opposing team much to the disgruntlement of the home faithful.
Taylor was under the spolight, for the wrong reasons, once again When Nottingham Forest met Huddersfield town on 1st January 2008. Similar to the previous incident, his decision to award a very soft penalty, and acrimoniously send Forest defender Kelvin Wilson off, resulting in him receiving some very harsh, if not justified, criticism from the footballing world. Forest went on to win 2-1.
