About Charlie Hall Band
Charlie Hall is a Christian worship leader and songwriter from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He is a member of a group of musicians and speakers that collectively form the Passion movement.
Band Members
Hall's band, in which he performs vocals and guitar, consists of Kendall Combes (electric guitar), Brian Bergman (keyboard), Dustin Ragland (drums), and Quint Anderson (bass guitar).
Charlie Hall
His middle name is Eugene.
Since 1991, Charlie has been traveling, songwriting, and sharing life with people in his home of Oklahoma City, and across the United States, and even across several oceans. He is counted among the many talented and often short-statured Passion collective of visionaries (1).
Known to some as "Poppa," (2) and known to many in Delhi, and McLeod Ganj, India, as "the strange bearded man with the tall bodyguard..." (3), Charlie has created several albums of diverse music throughout his pilgrimage as a singer-songwriter/worship leader. The latest collection of songs is called Flying Into Daybreak, and it captures many personal, and communal themes that Charlie, and the fellows in the band are trying to espouse and live out, among their local communities, the Church, and with one another. Renewing and encouraging local churches, engaging young and old with social justice action, widening hearts to see God at work in the whole world, spurring local artists on to imaginative and creative expression, and offering songs of rest to those who are simply tired are some of the hopes of Charlie, and his band of gypsies (4).
As many of the Passion collegiate gatherings were recorded live, Hall was quickly dubbed "a voice" for the Passion movement, performing on all eight Passion albums, which have sold well over one million units. While this accomplishment is a welcome honor, Charlie hopes to work beyond the old models of success, without spurning the community who has embraced him and his songs (5).
Charlie expresses the desire to be "honed into God, where I'm not part of a culture where I'm trying to make the people around me think, 'Hey, that's a good Christian.' I'm just trying to pursue God and not pursue being accepted into a club...I'm more honed into my pursuit of God in Christ and how he's forming me and changing and helping me love him and know him."
For those who have grown up with his antics in Oklahoma City (6), whether playing dodgeball with a violent vigor, or witnessing his interpretative dancing, they know his heart to see the Church loved from without and within, and to simply love those who may feel burned out, abandoned, disowned, or orphaned. With imagination, the grace of God, and a desire to have heart-level conversation and interaction, Charlie is on a pilgrimage to the heart of the Father. He welcomes you into the music of that journey.
Footnotes: 1. Other visionaries include, but are not limited to: Louie and Shelley Giglio, David Crowder, Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, and many other fine folks. 2. as in Will Ferrell as Robert Goulet as Notorious BIG crooning "Big Poppa." You're not as confused as you think you are... 3. Charlie and Dustin visited India in 2004, and got a lot of stares... 4. Not really gypsies. 5. Charlie also will never wear sunglasses inside, or at night, no matter what Corey Hart says. 6. The Center of Civilization, or, the Rome of the Unassigned Lands, Paris of the Lower Great Plains/Southwest Region.
Quint Anderson
Superpowers as follows:
Thunderous Low End, from the bass guitar
Mega Hair Mind Control, from his flowing orange locks, also a secret identity as Carrot Top, Napoleon Dynamite, and Mike Mills (bassist from R.E.M.)
Humor Hand of Death, his jokes have been known to cripple entire armies
Super Strength of Samson, Quint has been known to choke out youth groups, due to his experience in high school as a wrestler
King of Indonesia, during a recent trip to Indonesia, Quint actually wagered the United States for an arm-wrestling match. He defeated Simian, a local drummer, in a humid Chinese restaurant in Palembang, therefore he now owns Indonesia.
Time Travel, Speed Study, Quint is currently enrolled full-time at Oklahoma State University, and he travels in the midst of his studies.
Gnashing Teeth of Nocturnality, Quint is able to sleep on demand, and to stay up days on end without sleep.
Dustin Ragland
Best Bio'd by the following...
He began playing drums to Live's < I Alone>, and the Offspring's < Self Esteem>. Of course, until he inherited some drums, he played with sticks and pillows on his futon, listening to records. I am not lying about that one. Lives in OKC, in a duplex with a Californian, and his feet hang off of his bed.
Some pictures in his home: Taos, NM, a spiritual home, the roommates from Apt. 1008, with which he graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in 2003, and a ratty, rain and snow stained NYC subway map,
< Chicago >, by Sufjan Stevens says... < I fell in love with a place...I've made a lot of mistakes... > and this describes him pretty well.
Clarity, by Jimmy Eat World, was his favorite record in High School, and probably still is.
If it was written: George Lindbeck, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Seamus Heaney, Koine/Hellenistic Greek, Pablo Neruda, W.B. Yeats, Stanley Hauerwas, Orson Scott Card
If it is musical: Spoon, Aimee Mann, Iain Archer, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Gloria Record, Model Engine, Roadside Monument, Pedro the Lion, The Beatles, the Shins, R.E.M., Patty Griffin, Ryan Adams, Joanna Newsom, Bjork
If it is outside: Climbing, Skateboarding, Reading, Writing, Translating, Traveling
If it is given: World Vision, Amnesty International, Sojourners, OBU
Brian Bergman
If the CIA were looking for Brian, they might start by looking for a large concentration of keyboards, including a ginormous Hammond B3, and some dusty vintage classics, located in a home that is being worked on constantly, due to a desire for Dwell-Magazine-ifying his home, by the suspect.
They may also look for an abnormal collection of baby clothes, for Brian is soon to be a new father, along with his wife Amber. Due to his large height (tallest in the band at 6'8"), Brian also shows up on many Air Traffic Control Systems, so that passing planes don't mess up his hair.
They would probably detain and question (hopefully kindly) some of the artists that Brian produces in his home studio. Maybe they would track down all of his past piano teachers as well.
If they were tapping his phone (which they probably are...), they might hear a lot of the following words: Nord Electro, Sigur-Ros, Pampered Chef, Pedro the Lion, Radiohead, Will's Coffee Shop, Yamaha CP-70 Piano, Gigantic case for Yamaha CP-70, Digital Performer, Wurlitzer, Bjork, and other such terms.
They would note that Brian has been traveling with Charlie for six years or so now, and would trace his path all across the United States, and indeed, the world. They would find his knees imprinted in the back of tiny airplane seats everywhere.
Alas the CIA would have to use many agents, and hours working on their PC's (if only they used Macintosh), sifting through data, to find Brian. Yet they have no reason to look for him just yet. Not just yet...
Kendall Combes
Q: I heard Kendall does lots of musical things, what are they? A: When he is not single-handedly bringing the music via electric guitar with Charlie, he is probably producing music, working as a studio musician, playing piano some, or programming some beats and atmosphere, whether at home, abroad, or at the Music Group, an OKC studio where many great records you listen to have been made. Kendall leads worship for Christ Church, in OKC, writes his own music, and designs guitar amps. Whew.
Q: Does Kendall live in OKC too? A: Yes indeed he does, near the other fellas in the band, with his wife Beth (13 years of marriage), and his three boys, Joshua, Lucas, and Liam.
Q: What kinds of things does he enjoy musically, or otherwise? A: Musically, he admires Gerry Leonard, Jay Joyce, and other brilliant producer/guitarists. Those guys have worked with Duncan Sheik, and Patty Griffin, respectively. I know he also likes Matt Chamberlin, Steve Jordan, and some other great drummers like them. He enjoys behind the curtain in OZ,> and has been known to enjoy conversations that inquire past the surface of things, all while retaining a sense of awe at God's creations.
Q: Does Kendall play bass? A: yes, and in fact, he used to play bass for Mercy Me, back in the day. He began traveling 13 years ago, tracking down many miles in vans, station wagons, and all manner of transportation. He has had the longest tenure with Charlie of any of us, and so he knows the most embarrassing stories about C-Money Hall.
Q: How does he get those sounds? A: Well, if you come and ask him at a show, I am sure he will divulge...
