She has been the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh three times, briefly during 1995 and 1997, and from 2002 to 2003. Mayawati is the first and only Dalit (untouchable) to become the Chief Minister of any of India's states.
Mayawati studied law at the University of Delhi and worked as a teacher before embarking on a political career as the protege of Kanshi Ram, the founder of the BSP. In her career as a politician she has won elections to the national and state assemblies in addition to serving as Chief Minister several times.Mayawati is the leader of the BSP(Bahujan Samaj Party) and won the akbarpur seat on several occassions.
