Revision as of 07:04, 4 February 2008 by SeattleJoe (talk | contribs)(diff) ← Previous revision | Latest revision (diff) | Newer revision → (diff)Judith Lewis Herman (born 1942) is a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Harvard University Medical School and Director of Training at the Victims of Violence Program in the Department of Psychiatry at the Cambridge Health Alliance in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is also a highly influential researcher and author in the fields of of incest, child sexual abuse, domestic violence, post-traumatic stress disorder, and in particular, complex post-traumatic stress disorder.
Herman is the author of two books,Father Daughter Incest, first published in 1981,and Trauma and Recovery, first published in 1992. In Trauma and Recovery she coined the term "complex post-traumatic disorder" for "the syndrome that follows upon prolonged, repeated trauma."
Trauma and Recovery is a seminal and widely influential work. The book's status was summed up in Publisher's Weekly like this:
When Judith Herman's Trauma and Recovery was first published five years ago, it was hailed as a groundbreaking work. In the intervening years, Herman's now classic volume has changed the way we think about and treat traumatic events and trauma victims.
Phyllis Chester of the New York Times Book Review called Trauma and Recovery "One of the most important psychiatric works to be published since Freud."
