The first monk, the youngest of the group, broke his meditation and shouted, "Flag is moving!"
The second monk shouted, "Wind is moving!"
The third monk shouted, "Mind is moving!"
The fourth monk shouted, "Nothing is moving!"
The fifth monk, the eldest of the group, shouted, "Mouths are moving!"
Zen monks were once criticized for so frequently discussing the six realms of rebirth with various people. Nearly every conversation they had was about metaphysics.
"Where will I be reborn?"
"What is good karma?"
"Where is my dead grandmother?"
On and on and on. That was pretty much all they ever discussed. A Zen monk asked why they so frequently discussed such nonsense.
The Zen monks replied, "When you strike a bell, it makes a sound."
With this in mind, ask yourself: Why is Zenwhat provocative, impetuous, and silly?
I can't answer that question for you, but I will give you a hint.
