Welcome!

Hello, Christian Historybuff, and welcome to Misplaced Pages! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Misplaced Pages:Where to ask a question, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome! Gator (talk) 21:11, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

If you're into Christian history, check out the Jesus page. There has been a great deal of cotnroversy over, mostly, on editor's arguments that Jesus didn't exist and that this view should be included in the article. my change to kp villians page.

I changed External Links to External links ... how it's supposed to be in the manual of style. I also made your link the first item of a possible future list ... I thought it might be of interest and did not remove it. You want to talk to Erased Paper. -- ProveIt 16:57, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

James Bray Deletion

Usually I'd just keep applying it until he stopped taking it down, but it is really irrelevant; it's posted on the AfD page, so if a consensus is reached, it goes. Thanks for your concern though. Bobby1011 17:33, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

policy

The place to discuss policy changes would be Misplaced Pages:Village pump (policy). However, disallowing anonymous IP editing has been proposed many times before and so far has never been accepted. -- Curps 22:12, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Template substitution

Thank you for reverting vandalism, and thank you even more for leaving a warning template. But just so you know, there are some templates that should be substituted. Substitution adds the template as text, just as if you had typed the whole thing in yourself, instead of loading the template every time the page is viewed. This keeps the server from having to work as hard, and keeps the original message intact if the template is ever changed or vandalized. Some templates require substitition, and some templates will not work if substituted. Usertalk templates should always be substituted. Keep up the good work! -Mulder416 20:08, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

When you enter a template without substituting, wikipedia will load that template every time the page is viewed. Templates are treated like any other page, except that they are in the template namespace, which just means the page name begins with "Template:". (Example) If someone were to change or vandalize that template's page in the future, the change would be displayed on any page that uses that particular template. When you substitute, wikipedia will permanently add the current version of the code/text for the template you want to place on that page. Both will appear on the page exactly the same, the only difference is in how wikipedia treats it internally. -Mulder416 21:30, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Cooley Talk

  • If you look at the history, or even the comment he put up on the page after I removed his sockpuppetry comment you will see that he saw the changes I made and decided not to reinsert the socpuppetry comments. Thus, you are wrong -- the user was on and had the chance to object. Also, I notice from lookign at your contributions that you are pretty enthusastic about reverting "vandalism". This is great -- so thank you! But please be careful to not let your enthusiasm for reverting vandalism cause you to see vandalism in edits that are actually good faith. Patrol

Thanks for watching and fixing vandal changes. It is appreciated.67.167.238.236 01:01, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Friendly note

Thanks for the comments you sent to me the other day as 67.167.238.236 & I see your account suggestion is wise, such as now, when my IP changes or I travel. Noted my typo correction of "teacher" on your user page bumped up your vandal counter. My mistake & should have just mentioned it in my earlier note. Time wise for now, more or less, I have to be more of a reader than editor of info but, yes, I can think of a couple of subjects where I'd enjoy joining a group project at some point. Good luck with your editing and studies.71.194.238.184 08:15, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Star Wars

I know that Lucas has always been a Star Trek fan, but I've never heard that he was inspired by it. It's never been mentioned, as far as I know, in any documentaries or books about Lucas' work. I'll revert unless anyone has any objections. The Wookieepedian 23:59, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Well, I've already reverted his/her edits, but if they can give a source, they can reinstate their edits. The Wookieepedian 00:28, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

re: George Washington

I'll keep an eye on the article and apply semi-protection if the heavy vandalism begins again. If you notice the article being heavily vandalized and I'm not around, post a message on Misplaced Pages:Requests for page protection and/or contact an active admin. Thanks. —Wayward 04:39, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Civil War

Howdy Steve.

I've banned the anon user, as it was almost all vandalism. Being that you likely know more about the Civil War then I do, I'll leave up to you if you think his external link should be placed with the others. Oberiko 15:55, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

From the Coordinators

Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Military history WikiProject's newsletter! We hope that this new format will help members—especially those who may be unable to keep up with some of the rapid developments that tend to occur—find new groups and programs within the project that they may wish to participate in.

Please consider this inital issue to be a prototype; as always, any comments and suggestions are quite welcome, and will help us improve the newsletter in the coming months.

WikiProject Missouri

Dear Christian Historybuff, I am beginning the process to create a wikiproject for Missouri. in order to do so i'm required to show that there is a base of at least 5-10 people who would be interested in contributing to such a project. the project would serve to aid in the creation and editing of articles related to the U.S. State Missouri, its cities, counties, geography, transportation, culture, history, education, and so on. It aims to expand Misplaced Pages's resources on Missouri in a fair and accurate manner. Since you're stated as being a wikipedian in missouri, i wanted to see if you were interested. if you are, please add your username at Misplaced Pages:Wikiproject/List_of_proposed_projects#Missouri and User:Preschooler.at.heart/Missouri. thanks for your consideration. --preschooler.at.heart my talk - contribs 15:52, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi, Christian Historybuff. I would love to join the WikiProject Military history. You just need to tell me how. (Please respond here.) / / Brendenhull (talkcontribs) | 13:34, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

James Madison

Hi, Steve. Thanks for the note. Those edits from that particular IP seemed superfluous and questionable. Not to mention there were no edit summaries. Anyway, I reverted them and dropped a note on the user's talk page. I've also added James Madison to my watchlist. Cheers. PJM 19:56, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

Axis Powers

I've made a couple of changes but I am no expert in this. It's usually just vandalism reverting. Based on the edits though and the lack of warnings on the users talk page I suspect that the edits are in good faith but it's possible there may be some POV, but I could be wrong even to that. Cheers.

Re: Battle of Kettle Creek

Fixed! (It needed a <references/> tag at the end to flush out all of them. You may want to check if there's any duplication of links between the footnotes and the "Sources" section, since I didn't check for that.) Looks to be a very nice article! Kirill Lokshin 17:04, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Oh, definitely; you can remove the stub tags if you want. Kirill Lokshin 17:08, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Gary Friedrich

Always cool to see somebody reads some of the stuff I write! Friedrich's Marvel Comics guru, one-time editor-in-chief Roy Thomas, is also from Missouri, if you wanted to add a tag for that there as well. I would've, but I don't know the Missouri Project and didn;t want to presume. Yours in Wiki-ing, -- Tenebrae 02:38, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Though it's a bit on the cheasy side, it was a pretty good video. Thanks for the link, BTW. The Wookieepedian 05:32, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject Star Wars newsletter

Project updates
Greetings, Star Wars editors! Deckiller here. It's the first edition of the WikiProject Star Wars newsletter, and yes, it's a semi-ripoff of the Esperenza newsletter. I think it's important to begin with some good news: Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, and Jabba the Hutt have reached featured article status! Kudos to the editors who helped obtain these achievements!

WikiProject Star Wars is also on a mission to improve Star Wars articles using the following ideas:

  • An out of universe perspective versus an in universe perspective (see Misplaced Pages:Writing about fiction and the future ammendments to our manual of style)
  • Evolving lists into regular articles
  • Moving excess information and specifics to Wookieepedia (and providing links to Wookieepedia per the "see also" and/or "external links" sections)
  • Enhanced communication amongst WikiProject members
  • More to come

These should provide the basic steps needed to improve and "encyclopedia-fy" the Star Wars series of articles.

Things to do
There are plenty of Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Star Wars/things to do. An update to the page is coming very soon, and it will represent the new and exciting changes that Star Wars pages will be receiving!
Out-of-universe versus in-universe perspectives
Although details are forthcoming, I would like to take this time to explain the gist of this concept. Misplaced Pages has generally agreed that fictional articles should write about the topic from a "real world" perspective, focusing on real world issues and topics, with a section or two for plot synopsis and so on. Jabba the Hutt is a solid character example, and Clone Wars (Star Wars) is quickly moving toward an out of universe perspective.
Article evolution

As many of you know, lists of minor Star Wars-related themes are very common on Misplaced Pages; however, since these may be seen as violations of Misplaced Pages policy (and having seperate articles would breach even more policies), the tentative solution is to create general articles on a list's topic (for example, turning List of Star Wars devices into Technology of Star Wars, which allows us to cover everything from hyperspace to comlinks in a general encyclopedic fashion). This can be very tough for some broad topics, so the key is organization. I encourage all editors to list their ideas on the WikiProject talk page. It will be a very difficult — but tangible — effort.

For an example, let me point you to the Final Fantasy WikiProject. Some of us over at that WikiProject decided to turn various components of Final Fantasy X, such as Pyreflies, Yevon, and the backstory — into an article describing the world of Spira. Location descriptions were given a List of locations in Spira article, and the details themselves were placed on the Spira (Final Fantasy X) page. This is a decent template to follow — however, we will need to place priority on out-of-universe, "real life" topics and perspectives in realtion to the article.

Sounds confusing, eh? It won't, for examples will be popping up left and right in the near future!

Signed...

Wikitruth

Regarding your comment Jimbo and others are aware of Wikitruth and what Wikitruth does. As people who have criticism of Misplaced Pages they are one of the more sane ones. I think they are almost always wrong and take things out of context, but they aren't engaged in the sort of systematic disruption and harrasement that some others such as Misplaced Pages Review are. In any event, thanks for the heads up and have fun contributing. JoshuaZ 00:21, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Wikitruth at least doesn't directly encourage vandalism and I doubt anything they do even causes much indirectly. A few small groups of organized vandals do seem to exist but generaly when groups attempt to disrupt Misplaced Pages they do so in much more nefarious ways than mere vandalism. Organized POV pushing, attempts to reveal the True Names of Wikipedians and even worse behavior that I won't go into due to WP:BEANS. JoshuaZ 00:35, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Kay Noble

Hello! I checked the Noble page, and though the added stuff isn't vandalism, it's horribly formatted and more opinionated elements than true facts (aside from the bit about her height and maiden name). I'm going to modify the article and update it with the details, cleaning it up.

Thanks for notifying me!  :) CyclopsScott 22:57, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Userboxes/Categories

I was doing some work on tidying up Category:Christian Wikipedians and I happened to notice some categories on your user page with syntax problems that are causing you to be sorted on the category list incorrectly. It's not a big deal, but I thought I'd let you know in case you want to clean it up. The problem is the {{subst:Christian Historybuff}} tag. Instead of subst'ing your username, it results in the entire text including brackets being used as the sort key (and thus you are filed under "{"). You might want to change the key to just {{PAGENAME}} instead. The bad tag is used in several categories on your page (one or two of which are duplicate entries as well). --Fru1tbat 17:17, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

  • Looking on your userpage I see that you are something of a conservative. Even though there is a category labeling "American conservatives", the category labeling "American liberals" is up for deletion. This is obviously by liberals who don't want the bias pov of liberal celebrities and public figures to be known. So they don't want them categorized as what they are...liberals.
