Firestarter is a novel by Stephen King originally published in 1980. It was serialized in Omni magazine prior to being published.
Story
Template:Spoiler Firestarter is about Charlie McGee, a young girl who has pyrokinesis — the ability to create fire with the mind alone. Charlie, along with her father Andy, is running from The Shop, a government controlled organization that experiments on people with psychokinetic abilities. Her mother is killed and they travel to New York to try to escape. The Shop then sends John Rainbird, a Native American assassin, to hunt them down and capture them. Rainbird eventually captures both of them, and they are taken to a complex where Charlie must find a way to escape with her father while learning to better control her powers in order to use them to escape. She first resolves not to use her abilities, but later changes her mind, due to the advice of Rainbird, who pretends to be a friendly janitor. Andy Mcgee eventually escapes, using a form of hypnosis on his captors. Andy and Charlie eventually meet but are caught in their attempt to escape. During this, Rainbird shoots and kills Andy before he is killed by Charlie, who then burns down the entire complex. The book ends with Charlie offering her story to the magazine Rolling Stone.
Adaptations
Firestarter was adapted into a movie in 1984, directed by Mark L. Lester and starring Drew Barrymore as Charlie, David Keith as Andy, and George C. Scott as Rainbird. It also starred Heather Locklear and Martin Sheen.
A TV movie sequel, Firestarter 2: Rekindled was made in 2002. It starred Marguerite Moreau as a grown-up Charlie and Malcolm McDowell as Rainbird.
