Legend of the Red Dragon (LORD) is a text-based role-playing game written in Pascal for BBS systems as a third party door game. It was created by Seth Robinson of Robinson Technologies and saw you, as the hero, improve your skill until you are able to kill the red dragon that menaces your village.

Expansion

A big part of the success behind Legend of the Red Dragon is the ability for other programmers to write and add in additional "in-game-modules" or IGM's that expanded on the games basic events, activities and locations. Many of these IGM's were exploitable through poor programming or perhaps intentionally and later on the game was expanded to feature its own scripting language named Lady in an attempt to provide a more robust mechanism for game expansion.

Universe

The game features three areas of skill concentration:

  • Death Knight Skills
  • Mystical Skills
  • Theiving Skills

The game features 15 standard weapons:

  • Stick
  • Dagger
  • Short Sword
  • Long Sword
  • Huge Axe
  • Bone Crusher
  • Twin Swords
  • Power Axe
  • Able's Sword
  • Wan's Weapon
  • Spear of Gold
  • Crystal Shard
  • Nira's Teeth
  • Blood Sword
  • Death Sword

The game also features 15 standard types of armor:

  • Coat
  • Heavy Coat
  • Leather Vest
  • Bronze Armour
  • Iron Armour
  • Graphite Armour
  • Erdrick's Armour
  • Armour of Death
  • Able's Armour
  • Full Body Armour
  • Blood Armour
  • Magic Protection
  • Belar's Mail
  • Golden Armour
  • Armour of Lore

Other versions

The game has spawned an unofficial web based clone called Legend of the Green Dragon, as well as an official sequel and a multiplayer tournament version.

Exploring a village in LORD II.

The official sequel, Legend of the Red Dragon II: New World, was finally released after months of his advertising a game by the name of New World (which was not meant to be a LORD sequel, ironically). It was a major change from the first game, featuring full ANSI graphics which included a little "man" that represented your character. It featured a top-down view, similar in style to a roguelike.

The final release, version 1.02, of LORD II was released 5 February 2001 by Seth Robinson before it was sold to Gameport.

Tournament LORD

This was a port of Legend of the Red Dragon capable of handling many players at once that Seth ported over to the MBBS/Worldgroup BBS formats.

The unlimited nodes versions of MBBS LORD cost $300 and came with 20 full color glossy LORD posters designed by Justin Martin. These posters could be used as prizes and Seth always signed one of the posters.

Future development

Seth sold the game and its sequel to Gameport in 1998 to concentrate on writing other small games for PC and mobile platforms. His final release was 4.00a.

Gameport hired programmer Michael Preslar to update the game and several updates were made until 4.06 in February 2003 despite a 4.07 beta release around the same time.

A Win32 / Door32.sys version is in the works, titled Lord/32, Lord/X (elf binary for linux, unix, and bsd systems) is also in the works, and a web version title WebLord is also in the works.

Support

Support for LORD can be obtained several ways:

  • Registration questions, or requests to pull old registration information, can be obtained through support@gameport.com .. When requesting your old registration information, make sure to pass along the sysop name and the bbs name that you registered with.
  • Installation, bug reports, and other whatnot can be sent directly to Michael Preslar at mike@lordlegacy.com
  • The FIDONet LORD echo is also a good place to check in with Lord peers
  • Although Lord 4.07 has not been released yet, you can obtain a beta copy to play with. Send an email to files@lordlegacy.com with a subject of "send me lord" (no quotes, gets dos version), "send me lord32" (no quotes, gets lord/32) .. Make SURE to read the readme.1st before installing. Once done with that, check out the whatsnew.txt file to see what all has been changed, added, or removed. Also note: You will need a working, installed copy of Lord 4.06 or better to run the betas. One last note: Lord/32 no longer uses the Node Configuration from LordCFG. The command line to run it from your bbs is c:\path\to\lord.exe -Dc:\path\to\door32.sys
  • If you're interested in what all is new, changed, removed, etc in 4.07 (for both dos and win32), check out http://lord.lordlegacy.com/whatsnew.txt, the whatsnew.txt file that Michael updates as he works on the games. The whatsnew.txt file is uploaded to the server every day at noon.
