Sammy Seminole was the only mascot of the Florida State Seminoles from 1958 to 1972. Originally introduced at the FSU homecoming event, PowWow in 1958 Sammy was potrayed by a Florida State undergraduate students durring the school years. undergraduate students who dressed in fauxNative American garb. In 1972 Sammy Seminole was retired.

In 1978, student Jack Kidder made his way onto the football field upon his horse. The symbol ofChief Osceola and Renegade grew into an iconic tradition supported by the Seminole Tribe. Chief Osceola's authentic regalia is designed by women of the Seminole tribe each year.
