Newsletters, again

I have a rather bold proposal concerning the newsletters. I suggest we combine the NTROP and SEVERE newsletters into one newsletter, since we have had trouble coming up with material for the NTROP newsletter. Southern Illinois SKYWARN (talk) 13:45, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Alright, we can start working on everything next week. Southern Illinois SKYWARN (talk) 01:44, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

I've created a page to combine the newsletters at User:Southern Illinois SKYWARN/met newsletter. Southern Illinois SKYWARN (talk) 02:54, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

NY Hurricanes FLC

Hey Julian, all good. Nice work. Please let me know if you submit more material at FLC or FAC, I'm more than happy to help out where I can! All the best, The Rambling Man (talk) 16:35, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Cool. I think you need to pass by WP:MOS#Images (for sizes and not squashing text between images) and check your citations are formatted as well as they can be before heading over to FAC with the Weather front article but it's a decent article which would be quite appropriate at FAC. The Rambling Man (talk) 16:41, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
Definitely, FAC will expect {{cite web}} as best filled in as possible, as a minimum... The Rambling Man (talk) 16:47, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
Funnily enough, probably the best thing to do is re-nom it as soon as possible. You may still catch the original reviewers who had issues and if you've dealt with them all then there should be fewer problems than if you ran into a whole bunch of new reviewers who all have their own opinion on how the article should be presented. Either way, let me know..... The Rambling Man (talk) 16:53, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
Be bold! Your FLC is going well, you had two supporters before I showed up! I'm more than happy to help you deal with the comments you may receive at FAC so let me know when you renom it! The Rambling Man (talk) 16:57, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
I'll be there. Tomorrow I expect. Been a long wiki-day! The Rambling Man (talk) 20:00, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

FAC

I generally don't do full reviews of every article up at FAC, I just try to look at every FAC's sources and links, checking that they seem to be reliable and formatted okay. That's why my comments start with comments rather than support and/or oppose. A full review takes at least an hour and a half for me, and I tend to reserve that for articles I'm interested in reading that in depth, or where I have a chance of understanding the subject matter. So striking the comment just means it's resolved to my satisfaction. I'll have to say your sources were easy to look up and deal with, it's always nice when they are that well done! Wappinger Creek

Hi Juliancolton, thanks for you kind words, unfortunately most of my creek sources are Pennsylvania specific and would not be much help for a New York creek. I looked at the article and would suggest describing the course in reverse from its current state, i.e. start at the source and go the the mouth (to the Hudson River). I would also use USGS GNIS, which gives corrdinates for the source and mouth and the elevation for the mouth - GNIS here. I was also pleased to find lots of stuff on Google under Wappinger Creek: for example this has a lot on the watershed and its wildlife, while the watershed association is here (they would likely have lots of information if you contacted them - sadly neither Larrys Creek, not White Deer Hole Creek have active associations). There is also a federal stream gage at Wappinger Falls here, or here is a US Fish and Wildlife Service report on "Wetlands of the Upper Wappinger Creek Watershed" . I also saw info on canoe/kayak opportunities, or here is NY State environmental regs for the watershed. I would also look at the local newspaper and see what they say about the creek. Hope this helps, Ruhrfisch ><>° 02:25, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

  • I love creeks. I am always glad when anyone writes about them and am glad to help (just don't have the time to write on Wappinger Creek myself). Two more FA model articles you may like are Paulins Kill and Plunketts Creek (Loyalsock Creek). User:Daniel Case has also worked on Moodna Creek, which is nearby. As mentioned I have a lot of Pennsylvania and Susquehanna River specific resources, but see if you can find New York and Hudson River specfic ones - is there a NY Gazetteer of Streams or a Hudson River Watershed page? Let me know when you've made some changes and I will be glad to look at it again (and again). Ruhrfisch ><>° 20:10, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
Just happened to see this. I have had it mind to take some pictures next time I'm over there in warmer weather (they might go well with Wappingers Falls Historic District). Ruhrfisch is right that New York doesn't compile info on its streams as systematically as Pennsylvania does. But here's a highly technical report on the biology of the stream from the state library. Here's some info on the stream's whitewater rating. Here's DEC's regs on the watershed. Here's a federal FWS report on the wetlands of the upper watershed. {http://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=01372500 Here]'s the streamflow data (However, this is tricky to interpret ... I'll explain later).

The HV project needs a good article on the creek; it's the major tributary in Dutchess County just as Moodna Creek is the main one for Orange County (as in, the county alone ... to be fair the Wallkill is longer but flows through Sussex and Ulster counties as well). Look at the Moodna article andRondout Creek and use them as models. Also go to the rivers project (For one thing, courses are usually described source to mouth (you have it backwards)).

Two tips for images: Put in a request at User:Kmusser for a map of the creek and its watershed. And if you take a picture yourself (besides doing what I do and waiting for a day with green leaves and clear blue skies when possible) always make sure you're pointing the camera upstream, as it usually looks more interesting. Daniel Case (talk) 13:46, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks again for your support and the notification - I had not seen it yet! Ruhrfisch ><>° 00:59, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Portals

Wow,the NTROP portal looks great! We should begin work on a severe portal. I would help some more, but the templates I have created took me two hours to create, and then had to be corrected. They were county navigation templates, at that. I could be a content advisor for you, though. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Southern Illinois SKYWARN (talk) 13:57, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

There are currently 14 articles that are still on hold in this process, awaiting revisions. Congratulations to Nehrams2020 (talk · contribs), who sweeped a whopping 51 articles during the month! Jackyd101 (talk · contribs) also deserves congrats for sweeping a total of 26 articles!

This WikiProject, and the Good Article program as a whole, would not be where it is today without each and every one of its members! Thank you to all!

To delist or not to delist, that is the question

So you’ve found an article that, on the face of it, does not merit its good article status. What next? Especially where there are many glaring issues that need addressing, it’s tempting to just revoke its GA status and remove it from the list, but although we are encouraged as editors to be bold, this approach (known to some as "bold delisting") is not recommended good practice. There are many reasons why a listed article might not meet the assessment criteria—it’s always possible that it never did, and was passed in error, but more likely the criteria have changed or the article quality has degraded since its original assessment. Either way, we should treat its reassessment with no less tact and patience than we would a fresh nomination.

This, in fact, provides a good starting point for the delisting process. Approach the article as though it has been nominated for GA review. Read it and the GA criteria carefully, and provide a full reassessment on the article talk page. Explain where and why the article no longer meets the criteria, and suggest remedies.

Having explained why the article no longer meets current GA criteria, allow its editors time to fix it! In keeping with the above approach, it may help to treat the article as on hold. There is no need to tag it as such, but give editors a reasonable deadline, and consider helping out with the repair work. Bear in mind that more flexibility may be required than for a normal hold—the editors did not request or expect your reassessment and will probably have other projects taking up their time. They may not have worked on the article for months or even years, and at worst the article may have been abandoned and its authors no longer active. As always, communication is the key. It sometimes helps to post messages to relevant WikiProjects (found at the top of the article talk page), or to contact editors directly (this tool is useful for identifying active editors for any given article).

Only once the above process has run its course, and sufficient improvement has not been forthcoming, is it time to think about delisting the article. Communicate your final decision on the article talk page, even if there was no response to your reassessment and hold, and take the time to fill in the various edit summaries on the article talk and GA list pages to ensure the delisting is transparent and trackable. If you have any doubts about your final decision, you can list the article at Good article reassessment or contact one of the GA mentors, who will be happy to advise.

Article reassessment is perhaps the single most controversial function of our WikiProject, and the one with the most potential to upset and alienate editors. Yet it is one of the most necessary too, since without the ability to revoke an article’s status we would be unable to maintain quality within the project. However, if we approach reassessment sensitively and with the goal of improving articles to the point where sanctions are unnecessary, we will ensure that delisting is the last resort, not the first.

From the Editors

As we near the 4,000 Good Articles milestone, the project continues to grow and to gain respect in the Misplaced Pages community. Nevertheless, we continue to have a large backlog. If every member of WikiProject Good Articles would review just one article each day during the month of April, the backlog would be eliminated!

Please leave any comments or feedback regarding this issue here.

It is encouraged that all members keep both the main project page and the main project talk page on their watchlist to see any new information that may be posted there. The project currently has a total of twenty-two (22) members. It is suggested that you invite anyone who may be interesting in contributing in this project. When inviting someone please use {{WP CELTICS INVITE}}. If they do accept the invite, please welcome them with {{WPCELTICSwelcome}}. Our main goal for the project to bring Boston Celtics up to featured article status still stands. The article was chosen as March's collaboration and a good amount of effort was done improving the article by 8-Hype, Stormtracker94, and RC-0722. Your help is appreciated. The project currently has one featured article: Bill Russell, and four (4) good articles: Bob Cousy, Bruce Bowen, Dennis Johnson, and Red Auerbach.

Hurricane Hall of Fame

I've been working on the Tropical cyclone WikiProject for almost four years now and I know that at times it can be pretty draining. Hurricanehink and I started a fun little thing two years ago called the Hurricane Hall of Fame (based on a concept I'd created much earlier). It works just like any other Hall of Fame: every year, five storms are voted in based on notability. Up until now, the voters were just me and Hink and the honorees were just Atlantic storms. Both of those are changing (hopefully). I'm trying to get more Project members involved in the voting and I'm going international this year. This ballot is for the Eastern Pacific. Following this election, I'll send out ballots for the Western Pacific and then perhaps the Indian Ocean...all leading up to the Atlantic ballot early this summer. I'd really appreciate your participation. It's just for fun; something to lower stress levels. I'll announce the winners next weekend. The nominees are...

  • 1939 Long Beach Tropical Storm - Only tropical storm to make landfall in California in the 20th Century, killed in excess of 40 people at sea and in floods.
  • 1959 Mexico Hurricane - deadliest Eastern Pacific storm in history, 1000-1800 dead.
  • Hurricane Tara - killed over 500 people in floods in central Mexico.
  • Hurricane Liza - over 600 people were killed in devastating floods in Baja California.
  • Hurricane Paul - slow-moving storm left over 1000 dead in Central America.
  • Hurricane Iniki - most damaging hurricane in Hawaii's history, causing $2.6 billion in uninflated damage.
  • Hurricane John - longest lived tropical cyclone ever recorded worldwide; 31 days.
  • Hurricane Ismael - caused devastating flooding that killed 116 people in Mexico.
  • Hurricane Linda - strongest Eastern Pacific storm ever recorded.
  • Hurricane Pauline - devastated Mexico, killing 230 people and causing $7.5 billion in damage.
  • Choose three of these that you most want in. Post your votes on my talk page. The five top vote-getters will be inducted. (Slick user page, by the way.)

Updated DYK query On 15 April, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Tropical Storm Arthur (1996), which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Project

Why isn't List of Category 5 Pacific hurricanes in more categoriesprojects? Respond at my talk page.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 21:57, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

You are not really answering my question. Things like these should have one geography project (I added oceans). However, I am trying to understand all the "Storm" cats. They do not define scopes that exclude each other, but they seem to operationally exclude each other. I am not a member and should not make such decisions. However, I am trying to figure out what is going on.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 22:12, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
But it should have a geography project as well like WP:OCEANS, correct?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 22:23, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

User:KickAssBallerina

Hiya - is there something I'm missing about your report to WP:UAA? What's wrong with the username? GB 19:59, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

I don't think it's necessarily problematic enough to warrant a block - maybe take it up with them on their talk page using {{uw-username}}? GB 20:05, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
You didn't, don't worry - blocks tend to be reserved for names which are blatantly offensive, disruptive, confusing, and the like. If it's borderline it could be a seen as a bit bitey to block, that's all. Keep up the good work!GB 20:18, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for rving that tiny bit of vandalism on my talk page. I hope to someday return the favor. --Sharkface/C 01:36, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, we're both busy fighting off the vandals tonight. And I still hope I get a chance to return that favor. --Sharkface/C 01:40, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Vandalism revert

Hey Juliancolton. No problem at all on the revert. I don't do IRC, I was following the user concerned. Best, Gwernol 01:43, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Re: NY 21

No, I just haven't gotten to it yet. I've been working on a couple of big, long articles and making adjustments to them. Since the backlog is down to 9, I figure I could actually starting contributing copyedit-type edits to long articles rather than just pointing things out. I'll do it tonight or tomorrow morning, though. —Rob (talk) 02:57, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

my rfa

Hey, I know it's hard (just read my first RFA), but I think we just need to leave Rividian alone. I really appreciate your engagement in the debate, but it's just two opposes. VanTucky 01:54, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

FAC declarations

Julian, would you mind making it easier on my eyesight, and following the WP:FAC instructions to enter a bolded declaration at the beginning of your !vote? When I'm reading through 40 or 50 FACs, it can be hard to keep track. Thanks, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 02:55, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Oh, Julian, please don't worry; you haven't done anything wrong :-) It's just easier on my eyesight and memory if that bold declaration is first, where I can easier see it on subsequent scans. I read through all the facs several times a day, seeing what's new, but when I go back to them subsequently, I scan for new input. It just helps on my eyesight if those declarations are all in the same place. And thanks for all your reviews !! All the best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 17:27, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Spell check

Hi! I noticed that at Misplaced Pages:Village pump (proposals)#Being able to edit your edit summaries that you sometimes have trouble with typos in edit summaries. Have you considered using Firefox, which has spell check built-in? It's been a lifesaver for me, finding typos when editing articles automatically and finding errors in edit summaries and other textboxes with a couple of clicks. —Remember the dot 06:21, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Re: Spell check

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have tried to download it, and of course the computer won't do anything to make it easy for me. :/ Also, I usually know how to spell correctly, but the problem is sometimes that I want to write the edit summary extra-quick so I don't hit an edit conflict. So, I guess I'm just going to have to preview my edit summary to avoid mkistakes. Thanks, Juliancolton 13:06, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

That's too bad. What problem did you run into when you tried to download Firefox? It's always been very straightforward for me... —Remember the dot 22:35, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
