It is located at latitude 41.161 and longitude -81.071, with an elevation of 948 feet. Although it is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 44285.
For a period of time in the nineteenth century, when it was a stop on the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal, Wayland was called "Cyclone" because of it's rowdy reputation. The tiny town boasted 10 saloons! However, the name was changed, as it reminded people of a tornado. Historically, the community has also been nicknamed Cyclone, Newport and Parisville, but the name Wayland was ultimately chosen for the Welsh farmers who had settled the area, or "Wale-land".
When the canals were no longer used, the canal bed was repurposed for street-car tracks. The lawns still reflect the engineered edges of the canal. The concrete skeleton of a coal scale is evident in a residential backyard. The canal bed itself can be followed into the West Branch State Park and Reservoir, created by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the 1960s.
The simple and beautiful Wayland church, as noted in "A Private History of Awe" by Scott Russell Sanders , is now on the National Historic Registry by virtue of it's architecture.
