Great Britain and Ireland are the two largest islands of the British Isles, an archipelago off the northwestern coast of France.
The United Kingdom formerly comprised a political union of the two, and was known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, however the majority of Ireland seceded in 1922, forming what would become the Republic of Ireland.
