Harald was born about 910 in Blauzahn, present Germany, son of Gorm the Old, King of Denmark and Thyri Klacksdottir. Acceded as king of Denmark in 940. Difficulties with his son Sveyn I Forkbeard forced Harald to seek refuge at Jomsburg, between the Oder and Vistula river at the Baltic Coast, where he died in 986. This stretch of land was later called Pomerania.
May have had three wives or consorts: Thora, Gunhilde, Gyrid Olafsson. He had four children: Håkon Haraldsson, Sveyn I Forkbeard Haraldsson, King of Denmark, b. 965, Gunhild Haraldsdottir, Thyra Haraldsdottir.
