The Battle of Baghdad in 1258 is Hulegu most famous victorys. Baghdad was the capital of the small state of Caliph. The Mongols army set out to Baghdad in November of 1257. The Mongols set camp near the Hulwan river, and a part of the Mongols cross the Tigris to attack Baghdad from the rear. The Caliph's army launched a counterattack, which at first driven the Mongols back that have cross the Tigris, but the Mongols was able to lured the Caliph's into a marshy terrain. The Caliph's sodliers was cut to pieces, and only a few manger to escaped back to Baghdad. The Mongols push to the city, and reach the city wall. Baghdad was defended by a small army of mamluk soldiers and auxiliaries from some southern Iraqi tribes, and there was a citizen militia, which have little training and weapons. The Mongols lay seige to the city, constructed a palisade and a ditch. seige equipments was erected. The bombardment begin on January 29th and by February 4, a breach was made. By the 5th a Mongols controls a stretch wall. Caliph try to negotiate, but was refusal. On February 10th Baghdad surrendered, after Caliph came out of the city and gave himself up. The Mongols swept into the city on the 13th, which begin a week of massacre, rape, looting, and fire.
