• A call for source digging is needed! We've reached the end of the road as far as online sources for the journalist Doireann Ni Bhriain and we need people to help find more sources which may not be on the internet. Also, anyone who would like to contribute to the article (especially on a section chronicling her work at RTE), please do so; her article has only recently been written and the omission all this time was quite glaring. • The article Kevin Myers has been subject to vandalism lately, though it's been reverted quickly - in the space of minutes. Would protecting or semiprotecting the page be a good idea, particularly as some vandalism has been in violation of Misplaced Pages:Biographies of living persons or even Misplaced Pages:Libel. • The article Cathal Ó Searcaigh has been subject to POV pushing by User:Haiduc, who has selectively deleted relevant, sourced quotes and made at least one bogus accusation of homophobia. This page needs protection or semi-protection. Autarch (talk) 17:59, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

A protect for POV pushing? I may be missing a trick somewhere, but the only recent change by that editor that I see is this. Which seems like a perfectly reasonable reduction of superlative adjectives and hyperbole. Nothing that appears to breach NPOV. (In fact, it seems to support the use of less "interpretative" language.) It certainly doesn't look like the kind of change that requires a block, ban or protect. In fact, apart from your own edit, there hasn't been any major activity on that page for nearly three weeks. Certainly nothing of the order of vandalism, 3RR, edit-warring or other "nonconstructive editing" that would warrant a protect. You may want to read up on what protects are about before pushing for their application in these cases. Or, at the very least, consider addressing any issues with the current content in other ways. Perhaps I've used the wikipedia wrong terminology, but Haiduc has used false accusation of homophobia here against Paulmoloney and deleted a sourced statement provided by the latter. (Disclaimer: I am aquainted with Paulmoloney and am certain he is not homophobic.) I may need to read up on the appropriate steps to be taken, but I am deeply concerned that fanatics with much time and energy can turn Misplaced Pages into Soapboxipedia. • Sadly, our colleague User:Padraig passed away today in a hospice in Hackney in London. Many of you will remember him as being a prolific editor of Irish-related articles, one of the calmer "Troubles" editors. • Started article on Fianna Fail phone tapping scandal 1983 - there are some issues that need to be explained - although Seán Doherty signed the warrants for them, they were illegal - can anyone explain and provide references. Geraldine Kennedy and Bruce Arnold are widely known to have been targets, but there were also allegations of other peoople being targetted - are there any reliable references that name them. • I started an article on Educate Together from scratch. There was an earlier article some time back, but that seems to have been deleted on the grounds that that one contained text copied verbatim from another site. I did come across scattered references to the controversy in the Irish Times online edition (subscription required) - I no longer have access to it, but there was something about a survey of parents in the area which opponents tried to cast doubt on. This was some months ago. I'm not sure if Masterminds of the Right mentioned some of the opposition - it's been a while, but that may have some relevant details. Something that may be of interest to some is that the article Education in the Republic of Ireland has only passing references to the denominational nature of many Irish schools and one footnote about calls to secularise them. There has been controversy over the years, including, but not limited to: the controversy in Dunboyne in 2002, the controversy in Balbriggan only a few months ago and allegations that the Dalkey School Project was subject to hostility. I am quite aware of polarising an issues this is, particularly between secularists and supporters of denominational education. I want to avoid bitterness and polarisation. I'm thinking of an article that covers the history of debate over the denominational system of education in Ireland. Unfortunately, there seems to be little material online that is of use as references - I don't want to fall foul of the rule on no original research. Misplaced Pages as Gaeilge

A chairde, There really are a depressingly small number of contributors to the wikipedia project in Irish with probably a maximum of 50 or so edits a day, often by the same users. It would be wonderful if you who know so much about Irish affairs and have such interest would (if you speak Irish, of course) help translate articles and create new ones. We have far too many stumpaí, in fact almost half of all articles. A bit of enthusiasm from a few new contributors could really help the project.
I'm sitting my Leaving Certificate now and have found writing for ga.wiki really helped my standard of Irish, I also learned a lot from reading other pages. Your Irish doesn't need to be good to contribute - even if it's only adding categories or interwikis. If you can't remember a word, I recommend EnglishIrishDictionary.com for cross-referencing. Go n-éirí libh, and keep up the good work.
