Throwing Muses were a post-punk alternative rock band formed in 1983 by Kristin Hersch in the United States.

Kristin Hersh was the primary singer-songwriter of the group, as well as guitarist. She enlisted her step-sister Tanya Donelly to play in her band as well. They eventually signed to the 4AD label and released their untitled debut in 1986. Personnel has changed over the years. Kristin Hersch has also maintained a career as a solo artist. Tanya Donnelly formed Belly when she left Throwing Muses, though she has continued to guest in the band. Throwing Muses are officially broken up, though have regrouped on occasion to tour and record.
