Badnarik is an alumnus of Indiana University at Bloomington and worked for nearly two decades as a computer programmer in the nuclear industry. A gun-rights activist, Badnarik first ran for public office in 2002 as a Libertarian, earning 1,100 votes in a race for the Texas state legislature. In 2003, Badnarik announced his candidacy for the Libertarian Party's presidential nomination.
