Gulnara Karimova (in Russian: Гульнара Исламовна Каримова, Gulnora Islamovna Karimova) (born July 8, 1972) is the daughter of the president of Uzbekistan (Islam Karimov). Has two children - a son and a daughter. Was married Afghan American Mansour Maqsudi, who wanted to take away children from her after the divorce.
Activity
Since February, 2008 Gulnara Karimova has been appointed the deputy foreign minister for international cooperation in cultural and humanitarian spheres. Presumably, the new appointment became the result of her activity in frameworks of her public organization - Forum of culture and arts of Uzbekistan Foundation (www.fundforum.uz), which for last four years of the existence has held about thousand annual projects both in Uzbekistan, and abroad. It is the fist public organization in Uzbekistan recognized by UNESCO as the official partner. The Foundation has its Representative offices in Moscow, Russia, Beijing, China, Tokyo, Japan and Paris, France. According to BBC, Gulnara Karimova held defile of Uzbek designers in Louvre in Paris and exhibition of Uzbek suzani embroidery in Burrell Collection in Glasgow, UK.
Besides, Karimova patronizes other funds also created under her own initiative: “Zhenskoe Sobranie” (“Women’s Assembly”), engaging with the charity connected with issues of motherhood and childhood, and also fund “Mehr nury” (“Ray of Mercy”), which mainly extend personal help to the population in the remote regions, and also to give out grants and soft loans to farmers and businessmen from province.
All these have allowed Karimova to gain a great population. To judge about the trust to G.Karimova is possible on considerably growing attention of people to numerous actions and projects of the organizations created by her. Especially the youth is very active - annually the general number of participants in competitions and grants programs held by Fund Forum increases in several times.
Recently popularity of Karimova has increased among representatives of public organizations, businessmen that has allowed her to unite participants, so-called, “third sector” within one more fund - Social Initiatives Support Fund. For today the fund unites more than 50 organizations, including several international ones (PSI, UNAIDS, DVV International). Among the carried out projects within the its activity, for example, a lining of pipes and maintenance with drinking-water of the remote region which is in one of droughty districts of Uzbekistan, and also a lining of heating pipes in several cities in Ferghana valley.
According to some information, Karimova has graduated from Tashkent institute of information technologies. Also Karimova has a degree in political science, she made her МА in Harvard. She also has finished a course of jeweler design in New York Fashion Institute of Technology. She is the author and the fashion designer of a design brand “Guli”. Two years ago Karimova organized the first in Uzbekistan Fashion Week, where well-known and not very prominent designers and celebrities from Russia, France, Japan, Germany took part.
But Gulnara, apparently, patronizes not only designers and students. Some of the projects are directed to support handicraftsmen, including from the remote areas of the country. The newest for today project has sound loudly; project – “Asrlar Sadosi” (“Echo of centuries”), passed in huge territory in one of the Uzbek regions and gathered more than 30 thousand people, both participants, and visitors.
The politico-research activity of Gulnara, having doctor of political sciences degree, has concentrated in the Center of Political Researches. It is an independent organization which is engaged in applied researches concerning internal and external policy of Uzbekistan, regional safety, economy and the international development, has contacts and co-operates with a number of big foreign research centers. Among initiatives of the centre is the idea of formation of energetic club SHOS, creation uniform Central Asian information field, and also working out and research in sphere of transit and transport corridors of Eurasia.
