Northville High School is the public high school of Northville Public Schools that serves the city of Northville, Michigan, the larger Northville Township, and the southern part of the city of Novi, Michigan. As the school district population has grown throughout the years, so has the high school. 2,124 students were enrolled at the beginning of the 2006-07 school year.
Academics
Northville High School is noted for its high-achieving students. Northville students consistently perform above the average on state standardized exams, and the school reported that the class of 2005 had a 99.7% graduation rate and a 90.4% college enrollment rate.
Extracurricular activities
Athletics
Northville High School has teams in the following sports: football, cross country, soccer, golf, basketball, wrestling, swimming, hockey, baseball, track, tennis, lacrosse, cheerleading, pom pon, volleyball, gymnastics, and softball.
The football teams have their own website, www.northvillemustangs.com, sponsored by the Northville Football Parents Association.
Northville High School also offers club sports teams in hockey, rugby, bowling, figure skating, and equestrianism.
Clubs and performing arts
Northville offers many extracurricular activities, including National Honor Society, Quiz Bowl, German club, band, choir, Science Olympiad, Drama club, Recycling club, Robotics, and SADD.
Band Program
Under the direction of Mike Rumbell and assistant director Johanne Ray-Hepp, Northville High School's band program has been recognized both in state competitions and various festivals. Though the marching band does not compete against other schools, Northville's concert bands have frequently received high marks at state festivals and have been best in state in 2007 and 2008 and other previous years. The school also offers two jazz bands, and the Northville High School Jazz Ensemble I has won "Best of Show" in the MSBOA State Jazz Festival numerous times and is frequently invited to perform at such venues as the Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival.
Choir program
There are three choir directors at Northville: Mary-Kay Pryce, Mark Krempski, and Matthew Laura. Northville High School has boasted one of the largest high school choir programs in Michigan. About 1 out of 4 students in school is estimated to be part of the choir program. Northville is part of District 12. Mark Krempski currently serves as District 12's District Manager. Northville's Backbeat, an all male a cappella group, was selected as the top group of it's kind in the state of Michigan in 2008. The Chamber Choir, Chorale, and The Treblemakers remain, along with Backbeat, among the most respected groups in the state. Northville's Holiday Concert remains one of the few highschool choir concerts that has both the attendance and popularity to have three shows and draw a total crowd of almost 4500 people. The concert is famous for amazing music, the talented host/emcee who brings humor to the show, and the alumni participation in the last two numbers. Music from Backbeat, Treblemakers, Chorale, and Chamber Choir are played during the Christmas season on the radio station, 100.3 WNIC.
Theatre program
There are two faculty members in charge of the theatre department, Kurt Kinde, who teaches the Drama classes in school during the day, and Daniel Dobrovich, who directs the school's public performances. The school currently does three productions a year: a fall play production, a one-act festival, and a spring musical. Northville also began a One Act Festival in 2008, showcasing student written plays that are directed and cast entirely by students. This entirely student driven type production, one that doesn't use any adult or outside assistance, is one of the few of its kind in the state.
Broadcasting Department
Northville has one of the most advanced Broadcasting Departments in the state. Maureen Gorshak and Carolyn Davis teach a two period class that produces a full student run television news show every day. The students gain valuable real world experience with meeting a dead line in all aspects as students serve as directors, editors, camera operators, anchors, reporters, script writers, audio technicians, TelePrompTer operators, and run the show entirely by themselves. They learn to use a green screen, TelePrompTer, and Apple's (gay) Final Cut Studio to put on their production and in 2008, the show was entirely revamped and upgraded to a professional level by student driven ideas and extra voluntary work done by students both in and out of school.
Publications
The yearbook Palladium is produced through a course. The school currently does not have a newspaper. Up until the 2005-2006 school year, a journalism class had produced a newspaper called The Mustanger, but the class was discontinued because of low interest.
Recent population growth
The high school used to be located in the city of Northville itself. With the substantial growth of the surrounding community, the district constructed a larger facility in Northville Township, south of the city. The previous building became Hillside Middle School. Two years after construction of the new building, an extension to the east wing of the building was added.
