The United States Government does not officially recognise the military government of Myanmar, and hence has not formally recognised the change of name, (which occurred in 1989). Th United Nations, however, officially recognises the new name .
Due to the US government's non-recognition of the name Myanmar, all CIA World Factbook information refers to the former name, Burma.
