Due to a mistake I made when I revamped my userpage, all of this page's history up until 15:16, September 18, 2005, is located here, in the history of User talk:Blackcap/Irrelevancies. I'm sorry about this, but I can't re-move it. I hope this doesn't cause any problems.

Welcome!

Welcome!

Welcome to Misplaced Pages, Justanotherguyfromtennessee! My name is Ryan, aka Acetic Acid. I noticed that you were new and haven't received any messages yet. I just wanted to see how you were doing. Misplaced Pages can be a little intimidating at first, since it uses different formatting than other sites that use HTML and CSS. In the long run, though, you'll find that the WikiSyntax is a lot easier and faster than those other ways. Here are a few links to get you started:

There are a lot of policies and guides to read, but I highly recommend reading over those first. If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a message on my talk page. Please be sure to sign your name on Talk Pages using four tildes (~~~~) to produce your name and the current date, along with a link to your user page. This way, others know when you left a message and how to find you. It's easier than having to type out your name, right? :)

I hope you enjoy contributing to Misplaced Pages. We can use all the help we can get! Have a nice day. Sincerely, Acetic Acid 00:33, August 17, 2005 (UTC)

Thank you. I have responded on your talk page. --Blackcap 00:51, August 17, 2005 (UTC)
Congrats on the new beginning! Any edit, no matter how large or small, is greatly appreciated. Any further questions? Feel free to ask. Take care! Acetic Acid 23:30, August 17, 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for your comments. I have expanded the article considerably to the point where I believe keeping the article can be justified. I will expand it further in due course. Thanks again Mark83 21:28, 24 August 2005 (UTC)

The welcome on my talk page

  • I'm new but not painfully, but I was wondering why I have suddenly gotten two welcome messages in the last day, one, presumably, from you but it linked to a bird article. Is this going to be a common occurance? HoratioVitero 22:17, 25 August 2005 (UTC)
Responded on your talk page. --Blackcap | talk 22:35, August 25, 2005 (UTC)

The "Tripe" discussion

    • My apologies for jumping at you, there just seems to be an amazing number of people more concered with forceing the Misplaced Pages to conform to somthing of their own design rather than take advantage of the amazing opportunity available here to bring together as much imformation as possible, it gets frustrating. And inevitably there are people who do attack the authors and the commentors personally when, in most cases at least, the were motivated by good intentions and any missteps they may have made were, most likely, motivated by ignorance rather than malace. However, the nature of the system does not lend it self to better understanding; people invest time and effort into the articles that they write and are then forced to watch as they are ripped apart with little thought. I hope there will be no further altercations and that our respective additions (or subtractions as the case may be) will yeild fruitful discussion and a greater decimination of information. HoratioVitero 22:40, 25 August 2005 (UTC)
I'm glad you feel that way. It's very easy to overreact to things here, as the troll/sockpuppet/poor understanding of Misplaced Pages guidelines/vanity problem is huge and intensely frustrating. I sometimes wish I could rip the heads off of the people who contribute in the troll etc. vein, as they are the greatest single reason why WP is not held in esteem by many and how we lose our best contributors (witness RickK and Hephaestos, for example). WP is a great project, but one of its great weaknesses is its vulnerability and lack of viciousness against trolls etc. This is a good piece on the subject: . It's written by Larry Sanger, the co-founder of WP (I shamelessly took this article off of RadicalBender's page. He's got some good opinions on there, too).
Well, take care, --Blackcap | talk 22:58, August 25, 2005 (UTC)

Your signature

Please change your signature so it links to User:Blackcap (your user page) instead of Blackcap (an article about the bird). Thank you. Farquard 05:01, 30 August 2005 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/ISOP

You asked me a question about my ramble on that page. It was to the creator of the ISOP article. They had (unles by sheer chance the only two times that IP was used here was by different people but on the same day) put up Islam for deletion and I had tracked their edits to make sure they hadn't done anything else akin to vandalism. So, when I saw that worthless page I made them comment that for your deletion standards to think ISOP was more important than Islam must be crazy. Then I added that he should create a username in case I was confusing edits of two individuals just because they were under the same IP. gren グレン 21:21, 8 September 2005 (UTC)

  • Got it. I've added this to the talk page. Thanks for getting back to me. --Blackcap | talk 00:33, September 13, 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism

I'll keep my eye on him, but unfortunately, I'm not an admin. :P If he does anything else, I'll post an alert on WP:AIV. So far, he hasn't made any edits since yesterday. Thanks for the heads-up, though. Acetic' 05:33, 14 September 2005 (UTC)

  • You're not? What? Man, is the egg showing. Well, never mind, but thanks for the help; I'll get an admin some way or another. It occurred to me to go to WP:AIV, but I figured it'd be faster to get you, so I didn't. God, I feel like a fool. Well, that's one vote for your RfA, when you have one. Take care, --Blackcap | talk 07:27, 14 September 2005 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:Requests for adminship/GordonWatts

Why did you remove my vote at Misplaced Pages:Requests for adminship/GordonWatts? User:Zoe| 06:33, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

I did? Where? I'm sorry, but I'm not aware of doing so. If you tell me where, I'd be happy to restore it. I must have accidentally typed over it when I posted. I'm about to go check. --Blackcap | talk 06:37, 15 September 2005 (UTC)
Hunh. I have no idea how that happened. I'm awfully sorry. I'll just repost my message. --Blackcap | talk 06:40, 15 September 2005 (UTC)
Looks like Gordon did that for me. Again, I'm really sorry, just a mistake that I didn't even know happened. Hope it wasn't any inconvenience. --Blackcap | talk 06:42, 15 September 2005 (UTC)
'Sokay, glad I caught it, though, though when Gordon readded your comment, he didn't fix the vote count. I did. User:Zoe| 06:44, 15 September 2005 (UTC)
I'm glad you got it too. Good on ya. --Blackcap | talk 06:46, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

Sorry I was so slow to respond, Blackcap, to your question of Pat (whom probably didn't read your question here -probably not on his watchlist, or else he would've fast responded, ??) -and glad Zoe caught the one other typo I missed in the vote count; I took a day off to recover from overuse of the keyboard; I'm human.

  • Pat wrote:Support There needs to be more diversity among the admins in how they relate to editors who are political and cultural conservatives. patsw 01:55, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
  • You responded with this question, that appears to not be answered (I'm still leafing through the history) --> I apologise if I have failed to understand, but is your reason to support GordonWatts that there needs to be more diversity among admins? I can't imagine that being a good reason to support a nomination because it has absolutely nothing to do with the understanding and respect for WP policies and guidelines, abilities, or other admin-related features of the candidate, instead supporting based only on his political attitudes and the attitudes of other editors. That makes no sense to me, and I'd be obliged if you'd show me wrong or clarify your vote. --Blackcap | talk 21:30, 14 September 2005 (UTC)

My guess is that Pat was lamenting that many editors are liberal and express their POV in their edits, and that he wants more conservative editors to be balanced. OK, I'm generally conservative (except that I wanted some votes recounted in 2002's Fla. Governor's race + my liberal environmental stances) --but the over-arching point is that I don't let me conservative pro-life POV get in the way of unbiased reporting of fact: The Terri Schiavo article reports both sides and sources the assertions with links. You can't tell from reading it whether the writer(s) is/are liberal or conservative; That's how it should be. Plus, I make sure they cites their sources; additionally, I am not alone: Many others have helped make the Schiavo article (and other article) the Grande Articles they are -and they deserve credit.--GordonWatts 05:40, 17 September 2005 (UTC)

Rebuttal: if they're truly NPOV, it shouldn't matter whether or not they're liberal or conservative. Thus, the argument that there should be more conservatives to "balance" the writing is ridiculous, as that's just more POV. As I said, regardless of whether or not there are 90:1 liberal:conservatives or 1:90, it's a totally ridiculous and completely irrelevant criterion for adminship, as it has nothing to do with admin-related qualities, only with the POV of the associated editor.
"Rebuttal: if they're truly NPOV, it shouldn't matter whether or not they're liberal or conservative." Correct, but remember, this was Pat's point, not mine; My argument was that, while I admit I am generally conservative, the strength of my argument lies in my claims that my POV doesn't affect my editing in a noticeable or significant way. However, as a counter-rebuttal, (bold simply for readability, not to yell), I would point out that all humans are ...human, and therefore sometimes our POV influences our actions. With reference to your comments below, I try not to "YELL" (I know about many, but not all, Internet conventions and abbreviations) --but occasionally, I feel I am not getting listened to, and you know that there are boneheads out there on the Internet just as in real life. I both indent (usually) and use soft blue to indicate who is speaking. I indent when it may be unclear, but here, I "started a new conversation" that was in reference to all of the above comments but a little bit new. Also, I was posting to one small block, within a page, and this helped make it clearer, so I didn't indent.
By the way, and I mean this kindly (I do, really), I would recommend against putting the person's name you're posting to in your reply (e.g. "...to respond, Blackcap, to....") The way you reply to someone online, here or in another place such as Usenet, generally speaking, is post below them and indent once. So, for example:
Trundlehead: I enjoy wallowing in peanuts.
          Brungeny: I don't. I prefer almonds.
               Grunter: Why almonds?
Brungeny: Because they're not salted as heavily.
Kiddling: Cashews are good, too. That's what I use.
          Arkeeper: I'm a practiced peanut-wallower myself.
In this very silly example, it's very clear who's responding to who. Trundlehead started the thread, Brungeny, Kiddling, and Arkeeper are responding to Trundlehead, and Grunter is responding to Brungeny, who in turn responds back to Grunter. This keeps things clear, and makes it unneccesary to address them by name.
By the way, and I mean this kindly (I do, really), I would recommend against putting the person's name you're posting to in your reply..." Thank you; I take it in the right spirit; Anyhow, in my recent post here, I only posted "- Answers to your questions of Patsw - sorry I was slow to respond. Took a day off.)," however, you are right: I addressed you by name in many if not all of my RfA page posts. But this was done to let you know I was speaking to you, since there was a "room full" of other peoples' names, and had I not put your name, you would have only known I posted a reply, not that it was to you; If you read all the posts, that's OK, but I don't know that; Maybe you're pressed for time sometimes, and I figured you would want to see answers to yourself first.
Since you posted to my talk page, it's pretty obvious who you're talking to (remember, this is friendly advice). It just sounds aggressive to state someone's name when it's readily apparent who's being talked to. Think about how it is in real life when you're talking to someone for a while and they say, "Now, ______, listen to this...." It sounds like you're being talked down to, and it sounds aggressive. Remember that on the internet your words are everything, and it's no different than in real life. Caps are shouting, italics are stressing a point, etc. I am strongly advising you to end that habit, as I personally don't think that it's helpful or constructive to you. I hope you take this in the kindly fashion I intend it.
I'm going to post the relevant part of this conversation (i.e. your thoughts on Pat's vote) on your RfA's talk page. Thanks for giving me a reply. Regards, --Blackcap | talk 23:06, 17 September 2005 (UTC)
"Thanks for giving me a reply." You're welcome, and thank you, for replying back and for giving me useful feedback. I already knew most of the things you said, and I try to practice them, but it doesn't hurt to mention to me, just to be on the safe side. Sure, you may post my reply about Pat if you like. Take care, there in the Land Down Under.--GordonWatts 10:23, 18 September 2005 (UTC)

Posting styles

Another suggestion: when you post between paragraphs, rather than below the whole text, it severely breaks readability. Instead of doing what you've done here, this is what is standard, and adherence to it will be appreciated: post below the entire post you're replying to, including anybody else's replys to the same post, and quote relevant sections. To continue my previous example:
Trundlehead: Text text text text text text text text text text
text text text text text text text text text text
text. I enjoy wallowing in peanuts. Text text text
text text text, text text text text text.
I enjoy this becuase text text text text text, text
text text. Text text text text text text.
Brungeny: Oh, well text text text text text text text text
                              text text.
Kiddling: Regarding "I enjoy wallowing in peanuts": text
text text text text text text text text text.
I hope that's clear. Please adopt that as a practice, as currently it's very hard to follow threads that you take part in. By the way, it's not necessary to quote things like thank yous and goodbyes, it's obvious when you respond to them. Take care, --Blackcap | talk 19:22, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
Good idea to not break a paragraph (unless it is real large). However, in the example above, the original perso posted two paragrapghs, and sometimes when people break into the middle of them, they put their comments right below the part to which they're replying --and the indenting usually works OK, but if it doesn't, then they simply do this, by "signing" for the initial person:
Trundlehead: Text text text text text text text text text text
text text text text text text text text text text
text. *Just initial paragraph stuff....* Text text text
text text text, text text text text text.
I'm real talkative....text text text text text, text
text text. Text text text text text text.
I enjoy wallowing in peanuts. text text text text text, text
text text. Text text text text text text. (--Trunklehead) <-this is where I "signed" for him
Gordon: I also enjoy wallowing in peanuts. --GordonWatts
I enjoy this becuase text text text text text, text
text text. Text text text text text text.
I enjoy this becuase text text text text text, text
text text. Text text text text text text. --Trunklehead (this is where he had signed when he first posted)

Does that makes sense as an alternative?? ~~ Have you seen this method before?--GordonWatts 19:36, 18 September 2005 (UTC)

Well, it works fine if just those two people are going to read the document, but imagine coming into the middle of a thread that has broken posts like that and trying to see what came first. It gets very tangled, esp. when the person who broke the paragraph gets replied to. The first way is much better, and as far as I know, is much preferred. BTW, if you're going to continue this thread further, please start a new section, as this has nothing to do with the RfA anymore. --Blackcap | talk 19:48, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
Hell, I'm just going to do it myself. --Blackcap | talk 19:54, 18 September 2005 (UTC)

Ryan Moore

What did you do to the Ryan Moore article? I need to know why someone deleted it. WriterFromAfar755 21:14, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

It was determined that it was not notable enough to warrant an encyclopedia article here, and so was deleted through AfD (see Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Blood Line). It was then recreated by someone (making it liable for deletion through WP:CSD General 3), and blanked. I put up the {{empty}} tag, as there was no longer any content due to the blanking, and it was subsequently speedily deleted. For more information on deletion of articles on Misplaced Pages, see Misplaced Pages:Deletion policy. Please also see Misplaced Pages:What Misplaced Pages is not and Misplaced Pages:Vanity guidelines. If you have any further questions or some need for clarification on some of the terms I've used here, I'm happy to help, more then glad to, in fact. But please note that I was not involved almost at all in the deletion of this article, and didn't even vote on the AfD (didn't know it existed, in fact). Yours, --Blackcap | talk 22:05, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

re: VfD on Sprucefield

I found the request you left on AFD/Old to close the discussion on Sprucefield because it was so old. I can find no evidence that it was ever listed on the main VfD/AFD page. As a procedural matter, I relisted it and restarted the clock from today. If it was listed on one of the main pages and you can point me to it, I'll reverse the process and close the discussion. Thanks. Rossami (talk) 23:14, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

I saw that. Thanks for doing so. I wasn't sure if it had been listed or not myself, actually. Good on ya for taking care of that. --Blackcap | talk 01:22, 22 September 2005 (UTC)

DESiegel's RfA

"Frustrated" doesn't quite capture the emotion I experienced when this guy put the delete tag on that article. You say that the length of an article's existence has nothing to do with whether or not it should be posted for deletion. That is true if there is something wrong with the article (i.e. obvious non-notablity or vandalism). However, given that my article subject clearly is notable (and I made sure I covered notability right in the lead), I think it is pretty cavalier to list it for deletion. He obviously thought he saw a copyvio. I am suggesting that he should do more homework. 4,900 edits in seven months. What's wrong with this picture?

As to editing off line (or in a sandbox). I often do that. However, I'm doing it less now for a variety of reasons. Misplaced Pages runs painfully slowly at times. Saving large chunks of text can be painful. I find it faster and simpler to write online and save often. And, since we have trigger happy folks like this around, I will be putting an editing tag on future new articles. Sunray 08:50, 25 September 2005 (UTC)

That's probably a good idea. I definitely get the slowness problem, having had to deal with it myself, and an editing tag will stop any problems you're having. I've nom'd a few AfDs right off the bat myself that I thought needed to go, and an {{inuse}} template would have stopped me from listing it. Well, I hope you don't have any more troubles. Good luck, --Blackcap | talk 16:32, 25 September 2005 (UTC)
