Red Links Barnstar
I have recently noticed that there are a great number of people who work hard every day to remove the red links in articles (including me), and have also noticed that there is no barnstar for this, and personally I think that this is an important job, and something that many people should be awarded for. For example, the article about Hummelstown, Pennsylvania was completely overwhelmed by red links when I found it, and I worked hard all morning, so now it is red link free. Now, it looks good enough to be a Featured Article! I have no experience creating barnstars, and we really do need a Red Links Barnstar. And if you do make one, feel free to give me one (if you like). --Dogcowsaysmoof | Talk | Sandbox | Barnstar Gallery | Contributions 02:39, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- I just made one (see the image on the right). Neptune5000 22:56, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
- I went ahead and added it to the list of barnstars. Neptune5000 01:04, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
requests
Could someone make an adopt-a-user barnstar for adopters? Some really deserve it. If,and when, it's completed, tell me on my talk page. Thanks. Me what do u want? Your Hancock Please —Preceding comment was added at 19:39, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
- There is already {{Adopt-a-User Barnstar}}. Copied to user talk. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:44, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- If there isn't already a "ribbon" to go with a hidden-page barnstar, can somebody do one? (If there is, where can I find it?) Thanx. TREKphiler 16:52, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
BarnStars
Can only admin award BarnStars, or can anyone just award it to whoever they want? I'd think that if anyone could award it, than it would suffer from a lot of vandalism (people awarding them to themselves, etc). Nick4404 yada yada yada 15:33, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- Barnstars can be giving by anyone I do believe, and the honor system or self-policing helps keep the self-awarding in check. ArcAngel (talk) 16:05, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
Why do barnstars have to be substituted?
I'm curious to know why barnstars have to be substituted? Why can't they just be transcluded, since that looks cleaner? Gary King (talk) 16:07, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- If they are transcluded then the display at the receiver will change when the original is edited. This is generally considered bad for something posted to a specific user. See also Misplaced Pages:Template substitution#Benefits of substitution. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:59, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
Ridiculous Barnstars
Can they be got rid of?
Category: Social sciences and Society (Economics, government & politics, law, royalty & nobility, war)
Why on earth is there a Royalty and Nobility Barnstar? It's reactionary, elitist, and adds to the sociological phenomemon whereby the doings of the members are seen of more import and significance than other members of society. Note the ostentation design of this Barnstar.
Powderfinger Barnstar. A Barnstar dedicated to promoting a single rock band? Also needs to be got rid of. WP would be improved by the removal of this stuff. Centrepull (talk) 14:02, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- Like other topical barnstars, {{The Royalty's Barnstar}} is given for edits about a topic. The description at Misplaced Pages:Barnstars#Topical Barnstars says: "The Royalty and Nobility Barnstar is awarded to editors who make significant contributions to royalty and nobility related articles that expand Misplaced Pages’s knowledge about the biographies of people belonging to royalty and/or nobility." The background of the editor doesn't matter. The description should maybe be copied to documentation at {{The Royalty's Barnstar}}.
You have misread/misunderstood me. I am complaining about the http://en.wikipedia.org/Template:The_Royalty%27s_Barnstar, not the editors. You have not addressed any of my given reasons (above) why this Barnstar should not exist. Centrepull (talk) 08:06, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
- The "Bernstar" for edits about Powderfinger does appear narrow for the main Misplaced Pages:Barnstars page. It could be moved to Misplaced Pages:Awards by WikiProject since there is Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Powderfinger. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:30, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
Agreed. Can someone move the Powderfinger Barnstar to Misplaced Pages:Awards by WikiProject as suggested, as I don't know how to do this. Centrepull (talk) 08:06, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
- There are lots of barnstars and I don't think the existence of The Royalty and Nobility Barnstar or other topical barnstars implies that the subject is of particular importance compared to other things. Many TV series have their own barnstar at Misplaced Pages:Awards by WikiProject. Lots of royalty and nobility satisfy Misplaced Pages:Notability (people) so it's natural to have many articles about them, like other encyclopedias do. A barnstar could be created for lots of topics with many articles. Barnstars are not part of the encyclopedia and I don't think it's important which topics have a barnstar or how they are designed.
- The Powderfinger "Bernstar" was removed from the main barnstar page before your post. If somebody adds it to Misplaced Pages:Awards by WikiProject instead then I don't object. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:43, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
- Strongly oppose. Powderfinger does not have its own WikiProject, so it does not belong on Misplaced Pages:Awards by WikiProject or on the main awards page, since it does not have general applicability. You may place it on Misplaced Pages:Personal user awards. --Eustress (talk) 02:10, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
Barnstar creep
I hope I'm not duplicating any previous discussion (which would be ironic considering my concern), but many of the new barnstars seem to duplicate previously existing barnstars. Given that we have the "Cool as a Cucumber Award" and the Barnstar of Good Humor, do we need the Anti-Flame Barnstar, for example? Since we have a Working Man's Barnstar for "those who work tirelessly and endlessly on the more laborious or repetitive of Misplaced Pages tasks," why is there also an Invisible Barnstar for people who work in the background? The "What a Brilliant Idea" barnstar and the "Red" barnstar seem to be identical, and what's this Content Creativity barnstar? It's for adding content? Don't all editors add content? Maybe I'm being too stodgy, but it seems like a lot of clutter and confusion. Fishal (talk) 20:10, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
- I have this impression too, but since these awards are non-serious and "behind-the-scenes" I don't think it is important to fix anything. The one that particularly confuses me is this "special barnstar" that I sometimes see on userpages...what is special about it? Dwr12 (talk) 21:16, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, if you see any of these duplicate barnstars, I say be bold and remove them from the page and give a good edit summary or put an explanation here. The Special Barnstar, as I understand it, is supposed to be kind of a wild-card, miscellaneous award, which is helpful, but the name is a bit misleading—perhaps replace Special with Potpourri, Miscellaneous, Wild Card, Peculiar, or something along those lines. --Eustress (talk) 22:45, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
- That kind of sounds like a general barnstar, which I thought the original barnstar was for. That is why I don't understand it. Dwr12 (talk) 22:39, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm, good point. Well, I wouldn't object to removing the Special Barnstar then. --Eustress (talk) 13:30, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Naming
Is it me or are the barnstars poorly named? For example I noticed Image:Barnstar-lightbulb3.png is supposed to be the technology barnstar yet it is named as the "What a Brilliant Idea!" Barnstar. What is going on? -- Cat 17:51, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
- Does it say somewhere it is only supposed to be a technology barnstar? Misplaced Pages:Barnstars says: "This barnstar should be awarded to a user who figures out an elegant solution to a particularly burdensome bottleneck or problem, or who identifies a means to improve Misplaced Pages in a profound way. Adapted from the technology barnstar." PrimeHunter (talk) 22:38, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
- "English: The Technology Barnstar may be awarded to an editor who makes particularly fine Technology-related contributions. This award was introduced on March 3, 2005 by brian0918 and ClockworkSoul, and was designed by brian0918. See also Misplaced Pages:Barnstar and award proposals/Archive1/Technology." (from the image description page)
- I don't think it's a problem...I like the barnstars that can be used for all subjects better than the subject-specific ones. Bob the Wikipedian (talk) 01:48, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Policeman's Barnstar?
- I wonder whether it is appropriate to award a Banstar for protecting Misplaced Pages against Crackpot writing. I know we are to assume Good Faith, nevertheless the reality is that we do get over, and over again such things as Racism. In particular, I know of a Misplaced Pages who spots such Trash and is able to Revert such writing to its pervious version. I think of him as a kind of Knight (perhaps better than a Policeman) and I would like to award him a Barnstar for his work. Can I get some advice on that?
- (1)Is calling ovious Crackpot writing a violation of "Assuming Good Faith?"
- (2)Is it appropriate to award a Wikipedian a Barnstar for his Policing activity (reverting obvious Racist writing, for example)?
WP24 Award?
I don't feel that WP24's barnstar should be listed on the page yet as the project does not yet have a general audience—the project doesn't even have any FAs or GAs yet. Any thoughts? --Eustress (talk) 02:34, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
- I'm more concerned that it isn't mentioned at Misplaced Pages:WikiProject 24 and hasn't been awarded. It was added by a member of the WikiProject but that appears to so far be the only connection to the project. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:47, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
- It was added by me. It hasn't been awarded to anyone yet as the project has only been recently re-structured. I'd strongly oppose deletion, if it is to merely be moved to the project space then so be it. I haven't added it to the Wikiproject page yet as I've been rather busy with the Mediation Cabal. I'll do it now and remove it myself. Regarding FA's and GA's, I'd dispute whether the fact we have no FA's or GA's means it doesn't warrant inclusion. There are more complicated things that are going on, but never mind. I'll deal with them as co-ordinator. Steve Crossin (talk) (review) 02:24, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
- I'd agree that moving the award to the project page for now would be more appropriate. However, as this relates to a more overarching issue and as a member of WP Awards, I feel that some kind of guideline needs to be determined as to which WP awards should be listed on this page and which ones should just be kept within WP homepages. Either all WP awards should be listed here or some kind of bar needs to be set (whether it be number of articles under a WP, number of FAs/GAs, number of participants, etc.). Thanks. --Eustress (talk) 04:34, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
Proposal for new barnstar
I would like to ask for help in creating a Barnstar suitable for award to editors active within WikiProject UK Railways. There are a number of editors who tirelessly patrol pages, create new content and share their expertise of the subject matter in discussions.
Could someone let me know how I go about creating a new award for this project? I'm not that good with graphics, but would have a go! What are the guidelines on image size, colours etc and are there any basic elements that I can use (i.e. the star itself) that already exist?ColourSarge (talk) 23:26, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Working Womyn barnstar.
The working man's barnstar is redundant, because of the tireless contributor barnstar and the barnstar of diligence.
Aside from that, the gender pronoun looks silly, so I suggest deleting it. ☯ Zenwhat (talk) 02:46, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
- It is years old and has been awarded lots of times. It would probably cause confusion to delete it now and I oppose. The gender can be changed. See the documentation at {{The Working Man's Barnstar}}. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:22, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

I think there are too many of these things, some of them are needless duplicates or for cheesy/superfluous purposes. Like, why have EVERY religion represented as a Barnstar, when a Religion Barnstar could cover them all. And I hope I NEVER get a Barnstar for anything. Good liar barnstar
Somehow I don't think vandals should receive barnstars, since these are supposed to be rewards and not abuse flags. Thoughts? Bob the Wikipedian (talk) 01:43, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

- I'm not sure about the other ones you're referring to, but frankly, if people want to create their own images and give them to people, that's their prerogative...but I would think the true compliment would come from receiving a bona fide barnstar that is good enough to be listed here. Just my thoughts. I think this page needs a lot more guidance and leadership, but hopefully we can open the dialogue. --Eustress (talk) 12:27, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Graphic designer needed
I'm looking for a skilled graphic designer.
I need an image for a non-barnstar Misplaced Pages award with the theme "World Traveler".
I was thinking perhaps the following image, without the barnstar, and with the globe (or another one) superimposed over the Misplaced Pages globe (or the Misplaced Pages globe superimposed over it) - I'd like to see the world's countries and the puzzle pieces (with the continents more prominent).
The image also needs a passport laying on the surface beneath the globe stand (where its shadow is, but the shadow should be retained as well). The image's background must be transparent (not white like the background of the image below).
File:Interlingual Barnstar.png
Is this something you can do?
If so, please contact me on my talk page.
I look forward to your reply.

I would have been happy with a premade barnstar, especially since I am not good at digital graphic design, but wouldn't settle for "barnstar" or "special barnstar". It didn't fit into any category. Proposition: the Audio Barnstar
I've designed an Audio Barnstar. A barnstar for those editors who add high quality audio files to the wiki. (As usual in visually orientated media, audio contributions are a little overlooked.) Unfortunately I don't know how to make templates and such, so if somebody else would be kind enough to add this thing to the Barnstar page and make it work, I'd be most grateful. Channel ® 11:35, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
- Hold on, I think I got it sorted. Channel ® 11:50, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
- Yep, it works fine. So, because I was encouraged to be bold and because I think it was long overdue: ladies and gentlemen, I present to you The Audio Barnstar. Channel ® 12:07, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
- One small problem left: English isn't my first language and I have some difficulty copy-editing the blurb. Basically it's an award for people who create soundfiles for Misplaced Pages (how a violin sounds, guitar feedback, white noise, vocoder, binaural audio, and other sound examples), upload rare audio files (mainly historical recordings), or add their own, original music (to demonstrate a musical form like a fuge, for example). In short, anything but the usual snippets from commercially released CDs.
- I have a description up, but it's not too good. If somebody feels the need to copy-edit it, by all means.... Channel ® 01:11, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- I think the description is fine and the barnstar is a good idea. The award does look a bit similar to the Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Films/WikiProject Films Award though. If you can differentiate it a bit, that would be best. Thanks. --Eustress (talk) 15:24, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- Audio reels and film reels are both reels so similarity is virtually unavoidable, I think. Although the brown colour of the audio tape is quite different from the black colour of a reel of film. But I see what you mean and I'll try to come up with something to make the star look more audio-ish. Channel ® 20:52, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- I made the audio reel a little more prominent (better recognizable) and I added a computer audio waveform to the background. I first considered adding a VU meter or a microphone, but that made the design too crowded and messy. Besides, the waveform is quite a wellknown audio symbol by now. I hope the difference between the Audio Star and the Film Project star is now big enough to prevent confusion. (Is it?) Channel ® 22:21, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- Looks like a winner...great job! --Eustress (talk) 22:34, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

- I would remove the exclamation point. Also, I'm not sure how a picture of a baseball diamond constitutes a barnstar. When you add the award, be sure to add it under Misplaced Pages:Awards by WikiProject. --Eustress (talk) 15:17, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- To me, unless it has an actual barnstar in it, it is not a Barnstar. That doesn't mean it can't be a WikiProject award, but the name should be changed to reflect that. A baseball barnstar should be pretty easy to create. Take a baseball photo and add a barnstar shape in red stitching, for example (very original). Or, superimpose a baseball over the hole in the star (more traditional look, but much less unique). Or any other thing you can think of incorporating the Barnstar motif. But that's just my opinion, not any sort of policy.
- Secondly, it would seem prudent to create a single Barnstar for use by all related WikiProjects. Then, the text of the Barnstar (rather than the picture) could be updated to reflect the individual project's name. That would give a more consistent look, while keeping the total number of Barnstars down to a more reasonable number. --Willscrlt (Talk) 23:34, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- Ok. It was replaced anyhow. Thank you.WikiZorro 23:45, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- Agreed. Remove the exclamation point, and include a star shape somewhere. Also, just by looking at the picture, this could easily represent any baseball team's project, or even a generic baseball project. Is there any way you could distinguish this from the other baseball teams (without using copyrighted material)? Bob the Wikipedian (talk) 12:35, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Barnstar clusters
There was a time, long ago, when I wanted to award science contributors of note with few or no awards. So I created (with the help of multiple contributors) BarnstarClusters to reward, but more importantly show their skills were broadly recognized by their subject peers. I encourage other subjects to do this. - RoyBoy 03:09, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi all. I was looking for a barnstar for users who makes significant contributions to Misplaced Pages through reviewing and assessing articles and couldn't find one. The peace barnstar?
I noticed the introduction of the Peace barnstar, "to be awarded to users who create articles promoting peace, nonviolence, and tolerance in all it's forms".(See Misplaced Pages:Barnstars#Category_Barnstars). Creating articles promoting peace? Is it just me and my unimaginative mind or does this barnstar really not make a lot of sense? Channel ® 13:51, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
- I don't think barnstars should be awarded for promoting anything in articles. Misplaced Pages should satisfy WP:NPOV and not be used for promotion of any kind. A barnstar for writing about peace, non-violence and tolerance (with no requirements for a certain point of view) might be OK. I have notified the creator of this discussion. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:59, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
Seriously, I saw a lot stupider barnstars. Don't delete it, whatever you do, because if the general wikipedian-ry does not like it, then it simply will not be awarded. Sorry about deleting that one guy's credit for the barnstar above it, I don't know how that happened. No hard feelings. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dudemeister1234 (talk • contribs) 18:47, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

- A few remarks. The fact that you consider other barnstars more stupid is (in my opinion) not a valid argument to keep yours. (See WP:OTHERCRAP, for example). The same goes for "it simply will not be awarded". But again, this is just my opinion. Channel ® 22:07, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Barnstar Image
Hello, I Have recently come apon Image:Barnstar.svg and Belive that it should replace the image for the original Barnstar which is currently Image:Original_Barnstar.png
- Replace the Original Barnstar? Why? The Original Barnstar is an icon of Misplaced Pages and is more similar to star anchors (where "barnstars" came from). I would vote no, but this is a nice looking image and might be used for something else. --Eustress (talk) 19:11, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
- While I like this new image, I think there is something to be said for tradition. I don't think that the old barstar images should be changed, but perhaps this image could be incorporated into some new barnstars for specific categories. --Burnsie510 (talk) 20:18, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

New User Barnstar?
Hello all. How 'bout a barnstar specifically for new users? Simply for joining Misplaced Pages as a new contributing user.. perhaps something to start off their userpage and encourage them to stay and contribute. Is there such a thing already? If not, what do you all think about the idea? Also, is it possible for one to award THEMSELVES with a barnstar? Has this been done by anyone in the past? - There are many personal barnstars out there, i.e. for finding a hidden page. Typically, these are self-awarded. Home-made Barnstar
I knocked this together in an effort to celebrate the home-made individualistic aspect of Misplaced Pages. It's intended for people who do a lot of work in difficult areas and do it well. Recipients are able to think outside the box, the original intention of the WP:IAR principle, and their interventions are almost, or almost always effective in resolving or progressing difficulties and disputes. It is made from a photo I took on a recent visit to New Hope, Pennsylvania, where almost every house has a barnstar or a star anchor on it. Anyway, I've awarded it to a few people already and I want to see if there is a consensus to adopt it as an "official" award. --John (talk) 02:19, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Replacing an image?
Hey guys, I need your opinion. Someone recently awarded me "The Creator of the Barnstar" award (for creating the "All Around Amazing Barnstar"), and I noticed that the image used needed a little... work. I apologize to whomever made it, but I just don't particularly like the image (left picture). Sorry!!
Anyways, I was bored and fiddling around on Photoshop, and I made a new picture for that barnstar (right picture). I have three questions about this: Does it look okay? Is it okay to change the image of a barnstar made by someone else? And if so, how would I go about doing that? Any help offered would be much appreciated! :-) - k|e|n|g - t | c - 02:02, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

"Friendly Native" or "Local Explorer" Barnstar
How about a Barnstar for people who contribute information about their local area? I have found that particularly in rural areas there is often few articles and those which do exist are normally short and low in quality. New idea
I've noticed that there are some people who encourage other users a lot, maybe with some friendly message on their talk pages, an appreciation of their work, offering advice when needed or even helping other users with something. I think they deserve some recognition for their work, because without them Misplaced Pages will probably be a lot dull that it is now and editors would feel less inclined to contribute if nobody was there to appreciate their work and encourage them. But there isn't any specific award for such users. (I know the random acts of kindness barnstar is there, but shouldn't there be something more specific, something directly acknowledging their actions?) I can create the barnstar (in fact, I've already made the image) but I wanted to know what others think about this. Shall I create it or not? If it is to be created, can someone suggest a good name for it too? -- Chamal 14:12, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
