Would you mind checking the deleted en.wiki page of this image (it was moved to Commons). The log indicates it was uploaded twice (i.e. changed) and I'm curious to know what changed and whether the en.wiki version had any additional information (it's a replacement in a FAC that's had image problems; this image has some wrinkles and, although I don't believe them "fatal" or even intend to bring them up, I'm really hoping the change was a crop that dropped metadata). Hmmm. I'm not sure what I'm looking for, I'm afraid. But here goes... It was uploaded first in November 2006 with the following information. Summary: Statue of Adi Shankara at his Samadhi Mandir in Kedarnath, India. Photo taken by Priyanath. Licensing: {{self2|GFDL|cc-by-sa-2.5,2.0,1.0}}. Cydebot later changed the license to {{self2|GFDL-with-disclaimers|cc-by-sa-2.5,2.0,1.0}}. It was copied to Commons in June of this year, and subsequently deleted. As for the image itself, it seems to have been uploaded twice the same day, with the same resolution (400×547) but with 82,477 bytes at first, 86,942 bytes subsequently. Comparing the two images by sight, it seems that the brightness has been tweaked such that the second version is lighter. Clicking on "properties" (NB I'm on a Mac) doesn't give me much in the way of information about either. --jbmurray (talk • contribs) 13:24, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

However, given the dates, the explicit indication of the author, and that the author/uploader is an established Wikipedian, I'm fine with the image. Query

What I really came here for ... regarding the Ottava Rima situation. Ceoil will be a bit strapped by two factors: 1) he's not an admin, and 2) there is already a lot of potential for other editors to engage in baiting Ottava Rima (he seems to attract the type that can't let go). I'm afraid Ceoil won't be able to be effective unless an admin works with him/them. The way I've seen mentorship work before is that the mentoring admin can keep others from baiting the target by holding the power of the short block over the mentee in the event s/he gets out of line. At Swim-Two-Birds

Hi - thanks for your sterling work in cleaning up the formatting and appearance of this article, not to mention in restoring some of the perfectly good stuff that I (in a fit of intolerance) cut. I have one quibble about a change you made. W/r/t Brian O'Nolan's assiduity or otherwise as a student, I am trying to find the word which will pin down his attitude; 'inattentive' seemed wrong as while I wanted to suggest that he didn't attend lectures very often, the word actually implies that he just didn't pay much attention. 'Inattentive' and 'careless' are therefore both wrong, but 'careless' is more true about his actual attitude, although it still isn't right. On reflection I think that 'negligent' is the right word, and will change it to that. I am trying to track down in the various volumes of O'Nolan's journalism a reasonably reliable quote from him about how little work he did. His MA thesis is said by A. Cronin to be 'pedestrian', although since Cronin made an elementary mistake in translating the title from the Irish I doubt that he has actually read it. Lexo (talk) 22:52, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Experiment

I'd like to impose an small experiment on you, if I may, as someone who has been involved with Misplaced Pages:FCDW/August 11, 2008. How would you evaluate these images, both from active FACs?

Heh. OK.

• The McCain image. I don't know. Looking at the LoC site it says "No known restrictions on publication." I'm not sure that's good enough. You've said elsewhere that this is the LoC's "covering its ass" way of saying Public Domain. But it's not obvious, frankly.
• The Beyoncé image. Again, I don't know. It does look self-made, mostly because of the fact that it features another audience member's head. However I suspect a concert promoter may have included some kind of contract that the public will not take pictures, as part of the price of admission. So this may well be an illegally taken picture, even if it's self-made.

A challenge ...

... should you decide to accept. I really hate doing this when I know you're traveling and when we really need you on the Dispatches, but I've got pending travel as well, and just don't have time to get to this.

See the archived ANI and Talk:Maletinazo#Antonini Wilson background. This article was thrown together by various Argentine and Venezuelan editors when it was news, and has a bad case of WP:RECENTISM. At the time, I mostly just tried to keep it clean and accurate, and then I forgot about it. As a result of the appearance of Alessio, it popped onto my watchlist again, and a whole slew of new sources were uncovered. Amazingly, as soon as the subject started cooperating with the FBI, it turned out that the briefcase he was carrying through customs wasn't his at all and he was exonerated. At any rate, the article needs a complete rewrite, top to bottom, to avoid recentism, reflect the new sources, and replace Spanish-language sources with English when available. Not only do I not have time, I'm really troubled by the notion of an article being cleansed at the prodding of someone who works for a firm whose job is to do such things, so I hesitate to dive in here at all. I see you've set the ball rolling. I posted a note about it at the WP:FAT proposal page. You probably watch that page, but just in case you don't I thought I'd let you know so you can keep an eye on comments. For example, if I recollect the previous timeline, the students really didn't get started till halfway through the semester, and so there wasn't much for the FA team to do for a month or more. On the other hand it might be good to encourage the students to get started earlier so they don't have a mad rush at the end (traditional though that may be). So, just FYI. Good luck with it! Jb, I hope you won't be offended if I say that I think it's a little uncalled-for to round on Justallofthem in Cirt's RFA. Justa's not the one requesting adminship, right? And as far as I know, he hasn't done anything that makes him unworthy of commenting on an RFA, either.

I should have made clear who I was talking to in my edit summary; you weren't "insulting my efforts", it was Ling.nut. I have indeed checked the original newspaper sources, and the were not retranslations. If you want to prove it, ask Nishkid64 for the PDFs: he was the one who originally sent them to me. I think he obtained them through his college/university (I guess not every one gives it out free-aren't you a professor at a university in British Columbia?) The problem with the sourcing of the article was the fact that it was originally a direct translaton from fr:Léon Mba# La tentative de coup d’État du 18 février 1964. OK. No problem. Yup, when I looked at the NYT article (I have to establish a virtual connection to the university server to do so when I'm at home, and then go through the library website, which is why I didn't check it immediately), I saw that it wasn't a re-translation, though there was an error in the transcription. It's always worth double-checking quotations. My question/comment was simply picking up on an inference from Ling.Nut. And as I say, as I'm short of time, I simply scanned the preceding discussion very quickly. I hope to do a bit more copy-editing later. I just noticed that the same website was used for the wikipedia article Woman Hollering Creek (use the link 'La Llorona' on this site to see Maggie's article) ...does that mean it's okay to use? They've sourced it as "a website devoted to the Legend of Woman Hollering Creek". You can always go ask the librarian if they can hurry the order up! Librarians are always eager to hear from students. I recommend you go talk to them about the project in any case. A few pointers?

I've just cleaned the prose of Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories somwhat, and it's obvious your students (or some of them at least) needs a few quick pointers on writing for WP (e.g. "You do not need a thesis" and "drop the lyrical statement"), I'm just not clear where to do this best. • McCain was more or less a control. The "covering their asses" knowledge is something that only comes with a lot of time spent at LoC; there's no reasonable expectation that an image reviewer would know that. You're right in that such a statement alone would probably not be sufficient ("No known restrictions", after all, is not "No restrictions"). Doing a bit of exploring in the links, however, gets one here, which is far more explicit.
• As for Beyonce, snapping a photo without permission isn't really a copyright consideration (the issue can get complicated when notions of trespassing, etc. come into play, but that's more punctilious than we need to be here). The problem is that the stated authors (Sarah Marklund and Hanna Söderlund) ≠ uploader (Mark Anthony Efe). Opinion on synonymy of werewolf and lycanthrope

G'day Jb, I figured you may have an opinion on this question as I note you had some involvement with a (sort of) similar topic of Murder, Madness, and Mayhem. Namely are the terms werewolf and lycanthrope synonymous? Guyana

I'm not sure how much this is your area, but I thought I'd ask. I've gotten somewhat interested in working on the Guyana article, but I'm having trouble finding a good source for either the current state of the country or the history. I suspect what I need to do first is read a good summary history of South America, and then more specialized works. Is this an area where you know of a couple of good sources I should look at? The list of references in the article seems very weak to me; the one I could find that actually looked like a non-fiction reference work, Vere Daly's The Making of Guyana, turned out to be textbook aimed at about 8th or 9th grade students. Well, when you're dealing with a technical term, "is defined as" may be appropriate. The fact is, "major depressive episode" is a technical term defined by DSM-IV to have the meaning given in the article. Regards, Looie496 (talk) 20:02, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

Nah, it's clumsy and redundant in all cases, without exception. If you want to indicate that you are offering a particular definition (in this case, the DSM's), then you should say so. Citation formatting help?

(ec but what the heck:) Fixed. You need a "year" field in the citation template for Harvnb to work. That then matches up with the second parameter in the harvnb template. With the "real world" reference system with which I'm most familiar (MLA style), you wouldn't fill in any author, and would alphabetize the reference according to the first word of the article title. Outrageous Betrayal

I've been doing some work expanding this article and making it a bit more comprehensive, wanted to get your take on something. I was thinking of adding a "Background" section which would be ordered just before "Contents", but then I thought that the contents of the Background section would basically be pretty similar to that subsection already in Getting It: The psychology of est.
