The games differ from conventional racing games of the time with their unconventional plots and free roaming through city streets. Most racing games of the time only allowed following a predefined track. There have been three games released in the series:
- Midtown Madness, released in 1999 for Windows and set in Chicago.
- Midtown Madness 2, released in 2000 for Windows and set in London and San Francisco.
- Midtown Madness 3, released in 2003 for the Xbox and set in Paris and Washington, D.C.
The original Midtown Madness and its first sequel Midtown Madness 2 were developed by Angel Studios (now Rockstar San Diego) for Microsoft Windows. Their later Midnight Club games were similar to Midtown Madness but with an emphasis on the import racing scene.
Midtown Madness 3 was developed by Digital Illusions CE (of Battlefield 1942 fame) and released only for the Xbox.
