Crass were a punk rock band from England and progenitors of militant anarchism that became pervasive in the punk music scene. Their philosphical influence on numerous punk bands in the 1980s cannot be overstated, even if few bands mimicked their more free-form musical style. Whereas the Sex Pistols' anarchism seemed to be a self-conscious, nihilistic prank, Crass's anarchism was more directly linked to anarchism as a 20th century social and political movement.
