The Venus Project is a social, cultural and technological proposal which aims to create a utopian society free from the problems inherent in current global systems. It was started around 1975 by Jacque Fresco and Roxanne Meadows of Venus, Florida.

The Venus Project is featured prominently in the popular film, Zeitgeist: Addendum, as a possible solution to the global problems described by the film.

Ideals

The Venus Project was founded on the idea that poverty is caused by the stifling of progress in technology, which itself is caused by the present world's profit-driven system. The progression of technology, if it were carried on independent of its profitability, would make more resources available to more people.

Another problem identified by the Venus Project is human values, namely independence, which make people less likely to help others. And that in the future, human values will be radically changed by an abundance of resources brought about by new technology.

Fundamental to the project is the elimination of the current monetary-based economy and the creation of a purely resource-based economy, as well as a focus on the improvement on technologies.

Public Response

According to a 2008 interview with Fresco and Meadows, Fresco's lack of credentials has made it difficult for him to gain influence in academic circles. He adds that when universities do invite him to speak, they often don't give him enough time to explain his views.

Founders

Main article: Jacque Fresco

Jacque Fresco is a self-described social designer with no formal university education. Roxanne Meadows is a former portrait artist. The two live and work together on a 25-acre property in Venus, Florida.
