It premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September, 2004, but was released internationally the following year. The film is a social commentary on life in Los Angeles with its seething social and racial tensions. It was a critical and box-office success in the early summer of 2005.
Plot summary
Two car accidents, a carjacking, and a mysterious shooting of a police officer brings together a group of strangers in Los Angeles. The film switches between the different characters, in a style reminiscent of Paul Thomas Anderson's 1999 movie Magnolia, with a wide range of ethnic backgrounds and each having their own problems, and have to cope with the consequences of their actions. Racism and sexism are prevalent, as each character changes as a result of their experiences.
