Portal

Hi Dr. Blofeld,
I saw you intended to start a portal on Tibet, and later left to do so. I have made a small one (Portal:Tibet) and would like to involve you into the project, since I usually write on nl.wikipedia and I've seen as well that you have writen very many wonderful articles on Tibet. At my taste, the section of 'topics' could be enlarged considerably, probably by using Template:Columns or otherwise. If you find words like 'Dutch', 'Netherlands' or 'Holland' anywhere in the templates, than the reason for that is that I did quite some copy-paste work out of the Portal:Netherlands.
I haven't yet placed templates in the Tibet articles to inform that there is this portal, because I wanted to inform you first, hoping that you would correct errors or that you would fill in gaps. After a while, a few others that are active on this subject can be informed as well and finally it can be brought more into sight for anyone. I hope you like to contribute in any way?! Friendly regards, Davin (talk) 14:30, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

You can choose a color overhere by copying the content from there into Portal:Tibet/box-header. If you aren't fully satisfied with the colors presented there, you can select other colors overhere. Davin (talk) 14:48, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

It's very easy:

  1. First choose a color in "Web colors"
  2. Than edit the color in "Portal:Tibet/box-header"
|border=#BFBFA3           <!-- H60 S15 V75 the color of the borders around Box Sections -->
|titleforeground=black <!-- This is the color of the Box Section Title Bar text -->
|titlebackground=#FFFFD9  <!-- H60 S15 V100 the color of the Box Section Title Bar -->
|background=#FFFFF5       <!-- H60 S4 V100 the color of the Box Section background -->
|foreground=black}} <!-- This is the color of the Box Section text --><noinclude>]<noinclude>

When choosing the color number, it should always be preceded by an '#', when you use the color name, you should leave away the '#'. That's all :-) - Davin (talk) 15:05, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

I changed the colors into vivid Burgundy and white. Is the text background all right like this? Other thing: please note that the portal is gathered in the Category:Portal:Tibet Davin (talk) 15:17, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Can you give me a color number or name for 'yellow/pinkish' (see "Web colors") - Davin (talk) 15:20, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Tibet vs Greenland, always thrilling! :-)
Foremost in Dutch, I actually try to include articles too that attract a broader field of viewers. Other thing of interest may be to know that there are actually three articles that are visited by an enormous amount of people: Tibet, Dala lama and Tenzin Gyatso. My opinion is: they better be good. Next months I'll try to lift them up to a featured level in Dutch. Maybe you know to organize the same here in English? Would be nice. Take care! Davin (talk) 15:40, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Well, sometimes one can help a little bit to have people see the articles too. I wrote nl:McLeod_Ganj on November 30 and two other articles and I waited until the counter of Dutch articles was on 499.997. McLeod Ganj was number 500.000 :-)) It was mentioned in all Dutch and Belgian newspapers and on-line magazines, with this result and of course this one Not a bad result I would say :-) Davin (talk) 15:52, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Please revert this one if you don't like it. Its makes the whole background light yellow. Davin (talk) 15:56, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
I changed it, although I'd rather had the Portal to be informing as well. There is enough being covered up in Tibet yet and I'm not really happy with it when we do it to ourselves as well. I nevertheless know as well, that fun on working on Misplaced Pages is disappearing when there is constant arguing going on. For peace sake then. Davin (talk) 16:07, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
The portal is yours now. You can add and change whatever you like. Thank you for the great amount of articles on Tibet! I indeed saw your name and John's many times. Good luck! Davin (talk) 16:17, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Last little thing: It may be wise to place all the articles in the Category:Portal:Tibet on your follow list, because I'm not so often here. Next to that it is possible to have more selected articles. Davin (talk) 16:25, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

I improved Portal:Tibetan Buddhism also; I'm sure there are more relevant topics, but I'm not a specialist on this subject. There was an error on Portal:Himalaya region that someone fixed on my request. It would be wise too for you and John to put all the articles of Category:Portal:Himalaya region and Category:Portal:Tibetan Buddhism on your follow list as well. Good luck! Davin (talk) 12:38, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

I used other color to vary a bit, but you can change whatever you like best. Hopefully it will encourage more people to contribute. Davin (talk) 12:47, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
The color is okay now. In order to make the view on more monitors good, I added some tables. The problem of them is that they give a white background. So I added the color in each part manually. That's what happened. Davin (talk) 15:16, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
The red color has the code #E52B50. You can search (CTR+F) this code in the text and replace it by the color you like. Davin (talk) 15:39, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
I've made a German Portal too and I can understand more the compliments that you made on how things are organized on .de and .nl. For the German way of being I have experienced that they indeed are working very punctual and - although effectiveness is an important trait of character for Dutch - I would like to ease the compliments to the whole nation by giving the credits to one user that standardized all Portals in a way that makes it very comprehendible.
Knowing how good it works when a category structure like of the Germans it good organized, I would like to ask you for a favor. Could I please ask you to organize an oversight of all important topics and subtopics in a standardized oversight? I hope I can correspond this correctly in this digatal way :-$ I mean to say that it is incapabiling me to make a comprehensive portal of the English one as much as I did of the Dutch and German one. I hope this will function, I admire your work very much! Dear regards, Davin (talk) 00:24, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

For backing me on that whole translation-tagging thing. I know I get a little tag-happy sometimes, but my argument is that everything in the French has something to add to the English, even if it's only demographic information or a list of mayors.

Busy day today - don't know when I'll be back around. --User:AlbertHerring 15:29, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

I'm with you - it's not always perfect, relying on translations, but for now it's the best we've got in a lot of cases. --User:AlbertHerring 15:45, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Eh, it doesn't really bother me. To quote Samuel Barber, "I just go on doing, as they say, my thing. I believe this takes a certain courage." --User:AlbertHerring 16:38, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Nah - if I'm in and out it has more to do with my work schedule than with anything else. Merry Christmas to you, too! --User:AlbertHerring 16:46, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Looks excellent - good work! --User:AlbertHerring 17:27, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
That's as may be, but I'll take the Virginia Eastern Shore any day. Or the Blue Ridge Mountains. Or the James River... --User:AlbertHerring 18:58, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Methinks you'd be right. There's nothing quite like crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, starting in Virginia Beach and going all the way out over the water. You touch down in Cape Charles, it's like you're in a different world. And the thrill of driving over and under the Chesapeake Bay is amazing.
(By the way, most of the illustrations in the article are courtesy of Magnus's Flickr uploader. I had quite the time on Sunday...) --User:AlbertHerring 19:14, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Useful? I most certainly do, thanks. :-) And don't forget it was you introduced me to it.

Speaking of which, check out Tangier, Virginia - again, most of the illustrations are from Flickr. And that's a fascinating little island. --User:AlbertHerring 19:36, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Or it does, but not a free image. Speaking of which...I can think of a number of such images that I'd like to try and get permission to upload. Any idea how to go about that? --User:AlbertHerring 20:02, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

I saw you edited at WP:BG talk page. Could you have a look at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Bulgaria#Naming_of_municipalities and share your thoughts about the idea overthere? LocodeMaster (talk) 20:22, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

I replied on the WP_talk:BG page. For casing one can compare at Category_talk:Municipalities_by_country#Naming - Denmark, Sweden, Venezuela, Montenegro, Estonia (parishes in municipality category), South Africa use uppercase. LocodeMaster (talk) 23:35, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Sure buddy!! Over the past several days, I have been working on developing those articles. Currently, I am finished Bollywood films of 2007 and have saved it in my e-mail. Over the next couple of weeks, I will be working on the other respective years as well!! Once I save the page, I will let you know about it!! Regards -- Bollywood Dreamz 17:24, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

VDC coordinates

I've now started processing the first batch of ~2200 VDC coordinates, for the easiest-to-match cases. I've hand-verified a few points at random using the paper maps (using the center of the name for each feature as printed on the map as the reference point), and they seem to correspond to the automatically-generated values to within ±0.01°, so I'm pretty confident that the values being inserted into articles should be OK. -- The Anome (talk) 21:58, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Update: I'm doing another batch of ~300 now. If you want to create the remaining VDC articles, I can tag those too. The remaining articles should all be either ambiguous cases needing human disambiguation and/or checking, or articles sbout places in the Bhaktapur region, the UN map of which lacks the necessary 4 graticule lines for auto-extraction, and will need awkward hand-calibration before its location coordinates can be extracted. -- The Anome (talk) 02:00, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Crichton

Excellent work - I see you've added a lot to it. --User:AlbertHerring 14:38, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Yeah - I saw a list of popular articles, once; "list of sex positions", or something similar, was always near the top. --User:AlbertHerring 14:46, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
You know, though, I'm OK with it - one of the reasons I love the project is that there's no arbitrary barrier to notability. So some of those, er, "starlets" are notable, in their own way. --User:AlbertHerring 14:50, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
I don't know - can't say I have any experience in the field. :-)
By the way, I have surpassed 40,000 edits this week; this makes me absurdly happy, for some reason. Maybe someday I can be like you. :-) --User:AlbertHerring 14:56, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
Well, you know the power can be yours... --User:AlbertHerring 15:04, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
Aww, thanks *blush*
By the way, I tagged some Belarusian and Greek articles for expansion the other day, and tweaked the Belarusian template some. I think it works better now. --User:AlbertHerring 15:09, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

I've outlined a proposal for the work I want to undertake, but that page isn't a thriving source of activity. Since you volunteered to lend a hand, and since I feel inspired into editing an article at the moment, could you check over my proposal, compare it to the existing article and offer some feedback before I begin work on Monday? Reply to Dr. Ernst Blofeld ("The Bald One") and Davin

Thank you both for your wonderful Christmas messages and, especially, thanks to Ernst for the beautiful photo of the sand mandala. Also, many thanks are due for all the great work you have each been doing on Tibetan subjects - thousands of people will enjoy and benefit from the fruits of your labour!

The portals are great - I will try to add to them when I get some more time.

I have done some work on Yangpachen Monastery - I just hope the quotes I have made from Dowman are not too long - I just don't have the time to try to paraphrase them at the moment. One problem - I have been unable to put a caption under the photo of the Dorjeling ani gompa as it is listed as a "file" and not an "image". I don't know how to correct this - but I think it should have a caption to clarify that it is the nunnery and not the monastery. Can either of you two fix this problem?

I wish you both a happy and joy-filled holiday season and a healthy, peaceful and prosperous New Year - (if such a state is possible these days)! As we say here in Australia, "Good on the both of you!" It is people like you who make working on the Misplaced Pages such an enjoyable and worthwhile activity. Cheers, my friends, John Hill (talk) 01:06, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image (Image:FazılKüçük.jpg)

⚠

Thanks for uploading Image:FazılKüçük.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Misplaced Pages under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Misplaced Pages. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Misplaced Pages (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Pichpich (talk) 03:56, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

What's that? Fred Phelps, you say?

Ah, yes. I know him well. I'd tell you what I think of him, but I don't believe in using that kind of language on people's talk pages. Piping links, on the other hand...

(What will my search history look like this week? Oh, dear.) --User:AlbertHerring 14:39, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, Utah's pretty bad for that sort of thing. I think it's the wide open spaces - there's plenty of places where there's nobody around for miles to bother you, so you can get away with whatever you want. (And if you want some really hair-raising stuff, read up on the early history of Mormonism out there. Scary.) Kansas is better; I think Phelps and his outfit are about the only loonies of any prominence in the state.
I've been playing around with those German images some, and have added a handful to the proper articles. It's great. --User:AlbertHerring 16:26, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
I'm prejudiced in favor of Kansas, I have to say; my best friend in college was from Wichita, which is quite a nice place. And there's a certain wild beauty to parts of Utah and the rest of the desert states, I'm told. Overall, though, I'm quite happy to be on the east coast. --User:AlbertHerring 16:34, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
Yeah...German isn't a language I know well, nor is it one I'm particularly interested in picking up. But there's tons of content in the German Misplaced Pages that could use translation. --User:AlbertHerring 17:02, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
OK...right now it seems like it works fine on this machine. However, I have a lot on my plate at the moment, and I'm going to be leaving early to do some shopping. So I don't know how much I'll be able to get to, or when. --User:AlbertHerring 19:40, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Can you tell me where you got your VDC names from when you created the articles? I've been trying to match up the names of the articles with both the names listed in the UN maps and the names listed in the 2001 Census, and I've got about 600 cases still remaining; it would save me a lot of time if you could provide me with a source.

On a brighter note, about 2500 VDCs have now been geocoded. -- The Anome (talk) 02:51, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

I imagine they are also to be found at Maplandia? ~EDDY ~ 17:51, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Beninese additions

Good work on the Benin stubs you started today. They look good!--Thomas.macmillan (talk) 19:21, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

200,000

According to Soxred93's tool (the only one I can find that didn't break) you passed this milestone in late November. Congrats buddy! ~EDDY ~ 20:45, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

What I want to understand is how you rack up 7,000 edits in a month when I, in practically contiuous bot-mode, can get a mere 2,000. The mysteries of life... ~EDDY ~ 20:48, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

That is ab so lute lya mazing... (notice the spaces for effect) ~EDDY ~ 23:20, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

The images

Merry Christmas or happy Hanukkah, Blofeld. How you doing? The city of London must be splendidly decorated with bulbs. As for the images, honestly speaking they are not quality pictures although I like the characteristic Scandinavian mood found in the picture (just like Edvard Munch's works). The first one is too dark and not sharp. The second one is not large enough to meet one of the FP criteria in size. However you may ask people or regular "panel" about the images.--Caspian blue 13:43, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
