Steven Curtis Chapman (born November 21, 1962 in Paducah, Kentucky) has been one of the biggest stars of contemporary Christian music since the late 1980s. His father, Herb Chapman, Sr. owns Chapman Music Store in Paducah, Kentucky and has appeared on various country music programs. He is a highly-sought-after guitar teacher and was awarded a Gold Record for his vocal work on his son's early 90's Christmas release, "The Music of Christmas".
Steven was signed to a songwriting deal in the early 80's on the strength of his song titled "Built To Last" which was recorded by famed Gospel group The Imperials. (Album: Side By Side) Shortly after, was signed to a record deal with Sparrow Record Label, where he has become the flagship artist for the label, in spite of the fact that many other popular artists are also part of the Sparrow family.
Chapman's sons, Caleb and Will Franklin, are also musicians. Caleb received his first songwriting credit for his contributions on his dad's 2001 release, Declaration. He shares songwriting credits for the song "See the Glory". Caleb plays guitar and sings, while Will Franklin is rapidly becoming an accomplished drummer. Together, father and sons recorded under the name of "Stevenson" for the 2003 Veggie Rocks CD. (Song: "I Love My Lips") Will played drums and sang back-up on the tune while Caleb and Steven alternated lead vocalist duties. The cut quickly became a fan favorite and sparked a great deal of interest in the Chapman boys as future artists. While their immediate intentions are to delay professional ambitions in order to enjoy being "kids" a little longer, the boys nonetheless do appear on stage from time to time with their dad when school schedules permit. Third generation Chapman appearances have become a resounding crowd pleaser as the boys have already proven themselves to be quite talented.
Steven Curtis Chapman is also a nationally recognized advocate for adoption. He and his wife Mary Beth have three biological children, (Emily Elizabeth, Caleb Stevenson, Will Franklin) and they adopted three Chinese girls (Shaohannah Hope Yan, Stevey Joy Ru, Maria Sue Chapman). Along with his wife, Mary Beth, he founded Shaohannah's Hope, a charity organization which offers grants to qualifying families to help defray the cost of adopting, at home and abroad. Both were awarded the Angels of Adoption award by a Congressional Committee for adoption in Washington, D.C.
The Chapmans have recently released the first in a series of children's books aimed at promoting adoption. The "Shaoey and Dot" series is named after their first adopted daughter, Shaohannah Hope Yan Chapman. Authors of the series are Steven and Mary Beth Chapman. The illustrations are done by Mary Beth's brother, Jim Chapman, who is a public school art teacher and former member of the country group, 4RUNNER.
