The Hobbit (1937) is a novel written by JRR Tolkien in the tradition of fairy tales, originally written as a children's story. It serves as a preface to Lord of the Rings trilogy written later and sets the stage for that work.

The story, subtitled 'There and Back Again' follows the adventures of Bilbo Baggins as he travels across the lands of Middle Earth with a band of dwarves and a wizard named Gandalf.
