The eXile incident

In March 2001, The eXile held a contest to determine who, in their opinion, was the worst journalist in Russia. Wines who was at the time the New York Times Moscow bureau chief, was declared the winner due to his alleged "fawning" coverage of Vladimir Putin, and had a pie allegedly made from equine semen flung into his face by Matt Taibbi.

Personal

Wines is married to Sharon LaFraniere, who also writes for the Times. They have three children.
